My GMMG exhaust (replacing a Magnaflow SS muffler) arrived today and I have already e-mailed Hawks with some questions after opening the package; however, I have a foolish question.
I purchased the hangers and the RH side one looks very much like the original RH hanger. Now, that was meant for the bent hanger rod and the GMMG has a twisted bar with a 3/8" opening at its end. This would--it seems to me--mean that a bolt (not provided) would go through it an the mount's bushing. Then I was looking at the orignal LH side hanger/strap, and that looks like what should be used. But that strap is too long and the original exhaust mount had a threaded hole to run the bolt through.
So, how exactly does the RH side attach?
thanks in advance.
(BTW: I still have a few things to do before getting the car out on the road....the engine went in last October, and only recently have I begun to do the last items on the list. I'm sure I'll have a few further questions in my engine build thread.)
Here is what I have on mine. The right side used the stock setup. I don't remember it coming with a bolt. Whether the muffler shop used the old bolt (removed the Flowmaster at the same time the GMMG went in) or put a new one in, I'm not sure. But this is how it connects up.
Thanks, that's what I am missing on the RH side--the angle bracket with the threaded stud...I actually found this out while googling and found a picture of the hanger currently listed on ebay. Hopefully I can all this resolved today with Hawks. (Long + Hot Memorial Day weekend and I didn't touch my car.)
Got off early today (younger son needed car to go to school to see counsler about upcoming jr. year and what he needs to do for national merit scholar program) and the missing parts arrived finally!
seems that there is a bit of a problem. I installed the mount--attempted with it angled both forward and rearward)--and the only way to get the GMMG to go on the hanger is by jamming the exhaust up against the gas tank's shield. This result in zero sway/play. Either the strap on the exhuaust was welded on too low, or the bracket that I received is the wrong one (unlikely?). I either have to fab something up or.....
Note in the picture how the wye split is jammed against the heat shield.
Yeah, that's an option. I can elongate the hole by about 3/16". Perhaps then the exhaust can rotate upward a bit: i say this because (while the picture doesn't make it as obvious as looking at it) the RH side tailpipe is about 1" lower.
The GMMG sounds nothing like what is shared online, and that is the sound upon which I based my purchase. But it is loud! Especially when compared to my previous Magnaflow. I cannot say that I like it: yet. Did I say it's loud, and is most noticeable upon hard acceleration. I recorded it with my HD camcorder today, thinking that the recorded sound would be more realistic than the sounds I'd heard on youtube, etc. Nope. It does it absolutely no justice. Did I mention that it's loud?
Of course it's loud. Those "mufflers" are the closest thing to straight pipe as you can get. It is just fiberglass wrapped around the pipe and crimped. Not sure if the center pipe even has louvers. On first generation Camaros, they used to be called turbo tubes.
I bet you hate the sound/drone while cruising down the highway.
LOL. Yep they make noise. Mine does for sure. I heard a Camaro on the highway with them. He had an LS in his and they sound really nice. It's borderline too loud for me but it isn't a daily driver so that is ok. Wife says it's a Camaro it's supposed to be loud...I have the same hanger and the problem I am having is the rubber hanger part gets sloppy after awhile and the exhaust will start to rattle because of movement. Even though the hanger is worn, the exhaust is firmly in place it is on bumps you hear it. I have to address it soon.
Well, after month of driving it, I have become more accustomed to the sound and can say that I like it. Interestingly, everyone seems to like it right off the bat. My wife has said it sounds impressive, my boys that it sound "sick" and "imposing", people at gas stations have wondered what I have under the hood, etc...
Very nice car. That sucker is loud though lol.. I put Flowmaster 10 series on my pickup and regret it now its so loud but my 14yr old loves it and in a year or so it will be his so..
