header/exaust question for new engine...really need help!
ok, i dont know much about the compatability of headers. but i am getting a 355 put into my 84TA.. the engine is out of a 72 vette. i was thinkin bout getting the edelbrock 50 state legal headers for it. since i changed the engine,,,,will i have to consider differant headers?? im keeping all of the emmisions stuff cause its a daily driver still, so it has to have the air fittings and o2 sensor.........................................................................................................................................................................................................also, my plans were to make it dual exaust and just run them header mufflers till it comes time to pass emisions.,,is this possable at all to do with the 50 state legal headers?? if not dual, can i do it single?

You have some options.
First is header size, you may consider getting 1 3/4 headers and I don't think Edelbrock makes them.
Second is the Y-pipe, going to dual cats may require a special one (I know it needs a special adapter). Again I don't think Edelbrock accomodates you.
You don't have to keep any emissions stuff on until it time for your test, but beware of the law. You will definitely need headers with AIR and O2 fittings.
There are several manufacturers out there. Dig through the archives for info. I personally have the SLP ones and I know they can give you the options I mentioned, but they are pricey.
Hope this helps.

iv been thinkin about the SLP ones cause i have heard better stuff from them than i have for the edelbrocks...how hard will it be to make it dual? will i have clearance problems?also with the SLP headers, can i run a header muffler till emissions time?

First, the engine doesn't need unique headers. Anything made for SBC & 3rd gen will "fit".
Edelbrock makes 1-5/8" primaries only. They are intended to be emissions-legal, do-it-yourself exhaust upgrade pieces.
Dual exhaust should be limited to non-emissions, large cubic inch engines. You don't qualify on either count.
SLP makes and recommends 1-3/4" primary shorties for 350s. You do have the option of going with a dual cat system, which uses 2-1/4" pipe from each side to a cat; the two cats are located side-by-side in the same location as your current single cat. This system is slightly better than a single 3" cat, but with the high-flow 3" cats available today, the extra expense would probably not be worth it.
Unless you're going hog-wild on this 350, the SLPs will be fine. If you are going hog-wild, then emissions is probably out of the question anyway.

slp makes a good header in my opinion - forget about the header mufflers the ,slp point straight down and do not have a conventional (header) type flange for a header muffler to bolt to
nor is there enough clearance unless you make a pipe to run them where the cat used to be.
and if you go w/long tubes a header muffler will never clear.
if you are worried about the whole single exhaust thing-i woulnt
you will find w/good header and quality exhaust system ,FLOMASTER,MUFFLEX,SLP,MAC. and there are more
you will get great performance and sound.
for example on my camaro i run hooker 1 3/4 long tubes in to a custom 3" y pipe to a single 3" flowmaster.
with headers uncapped ive run a best 10.60 @ 128.
with y pipe hooked up the car ran a best of 10.81 @ 126.
not that great of a loss on 500+ hp motor.
and if you still feel a single 3" will not flow enough for you than
mufflex sell a single 4".
