I have an exhaust man that will fabricate a y pipe, and a three inch single pipe all the way back for under 300 dollars. The question is; with a 2" manifold, will it help??
I will say yes. How much that is debatable. The whole T-pipe just screams restriction. If I had to take an educated guess it will add about 10 hp. If the N10 with 2 pipes is good for 25HP I think you could safely say you will gain a little less than 1/2 without the HO mannies as I feel the y-pipe gain would be equal to gains of the 2 individual pipes that is the N10
If you couple this with a full 3" system I think you will benefit more in the HP category
There's a lot more to the dual cats than just the Y transition. It's better manifolds, smoother bent pipes, larger pipes, two cats, and the transition.
A crush bent fabricated setup off the LO manifolds and into a single cat would leave most of those potential improvements on the table. It's not potential for a HUGE gain even if you do it right. Doing a half-*** effort, the returns are going to be diminished to a point that it's not worth doing.

There is an article floating around here which I don't have time to find at the moment. It compares flow numbers of various 3rd gen exhausts. The long and short of it is, the N10 on a 2.25" manifold car, gave a similar flow increase as putting headers on a single cat car.

Food for thought!
so now you got me thinking that from the sounds of it the real restriction is the manifold not the t-pipe. If removing the 2,25" manifold and installing headers on a t-pipe car with a single cat (3") will flow the as the N10, than I would retract my previous assessment and say that the y-pipe would be a waste of money and time without the HO manifolds. Is the pipe size from the cats back 2.25" or 2.5" on the N10 systems? There was no real y-pipe factory installed on any 3rd gens correct?

Like Drew said, it's the whole shebang.
I had an exhaust bent up for my '83 CFI. At first I left the 2" manifolds on and had a 2.5" Y pipe made that went into a 3" I-pipe. I felt some improvement, I guess. But I also felt the 2" manifolds were a bottle neck and replaced them with HO L-69 units. Should have done that in the first place.
The N10 is two 2,25 going in and going out into a 2.75" I-pipe.

So when you said 5 hp in a post above you were being generous speaking from experience Bang ,Bang Baby anyone got a set of HO manifolds they want to sell>

I spent a ton of money changing that exhaust around - several times. In the end, it had L-69 exhaust manifolds, custom 2.5 inch Y pipe, 3" high flow cat, 3" I-pipe, and SLP TOTL muffler/tailpipes.
What I REALLY wanted was a full N10, front to back. I got excited when a friend of 1MeanZ's was parting a 1989 G92 IROC. I should have known all of that stuff would be long gone on that car.
Unless your exhaust guy has a mandrel bending machine, it'd be worse than the stock stuff.
Magnaflow had their Y-pipe unavailable for awhile, but it's been back a couple years now.
Walker, and I'm sure AP, and Felpro offer donut gaskets. I'm sure one of them would fit snug in the manifold. Or check out what you have now, if it doesn't fit as is it can probably be bored out to match the larger manifolds.
Yes, the guy that makes exhaust mandrel bends everything, very professional, and will do it without a cat. I just need better manifolds. I also have all those AIR tubes to reinstall, or delete.

I have a set, but I think the cost for shipping them would be expen$ive. I will dig them out tonight.

When you finally got it done, did you feel a difference afterwards?
Agreed on the N10, been looking for awhile for a used set..

Oh, for sure. Hard to quantify how much of a difference from beginning to end though, since I kept making changes. I think 15-20 hp more is a fair statement. The Crossfire did have a serious exhaust note afterwards though.
BTW, those L-69 manifolds......
A well known eBay seller of OEM GM parts was asking something crazy for them, like several hundred dollars. I found that interesting and put them on my watch list. Obviously, they didn't sell. They were relisted as a no reserve auction. I was the only bidder and got them for $9. The shipping was like 40 bucks, though.

Funny!
I PM'd No Emissions up top about his. I figured the manifolds would cost that to ship, I had a set of springs shipped to me from CT and they were about $40 also and 4 springs sure weighed a ton.
Manifolds aren’t expensive to ship. Don’t bother with a box, shrink wrap tightly together, some tape to keep it intact. Ship from a customer counter, not one of the “shipping” stores. I’m a UPS guy.
For me, changing out the "T" pipe for a real Y pipe (I used SLP) made the greatest single seat-of-the-pants difference.
And this was with LG4 manifolds.

SLP meaning "street legal performance"? What type of muffler did you use?

I believe it. An exhaust "T" in any car makes no sense. When the exhaust flow from the "I" of the "T" comes down into the perpendicular pipe it has to cause serious backpressure on the other bank's flow. Even at moderate flow, I can see how a Y might make a lot of sense.

I had the 3" SLP catback system. Now referred to as 2OTL. With their muffler.
The first muffler "blew up" - stress cracks developed along some welds.
Eventually they sent me a new, redesigned muffler with extra bracing and welds along the case.
I still have the complete SLP system with their 1 5/8" headers and that will be going back on the car when I get it going again.

I am going to my exhaust guy this week, and ask him if the magnaflow which I like, and is on the car can be used with a 3" pipe. I want to stay with the 2 1/2 duel outlets.
Is this the piece that goes between the y-pipe and exh manifold? Is this what I need to mate HO manifold to magnaflow y-pipe?
You may want to check the inside dimension of that doughnut. It looks to be the one of a 2" LO manifold. Below is a pic of the set of HO manniesI just purchased from a member here. The doughnut looks different. Drew posted a closer up shot of the HO spacer in a post above.
Id love to buy that spacer. Seems like its hard to find like many other parts for these cars. It gets frustrating. Id love to go with the manifolds but I do have a set of Hooker 2460s I know will hook up to their Y-pipe

There is BethsCamaro here on this board but you probably have tried her. Try a guy in GA NightRider I think you can find him the Vendor review forum.
This guy is who I got my intake parts from. He scraps third gens here in FL. Not sure if he ships but he delivered to my door the base I bought. He is a good guy mikeymorris3@yahoo.com
beth91camaro got me fixed up Vinny. I had headers ready to go but the more I thought of the better manifolds and Magnaflow y-pipe would suit my build just fine. I wont have to worry with putting in a heated o2 oxygen sensor, tightening loose header bolts down the road..etc This isn't a performance build anyway I wont be racing it. It will be pretty much a stock L98 running a modded TBI with a 2200 stall and 3.73 Posi, so should be fun enough.

Bring me up to speed please. That spacer is for the HO manifold? I am going to have a Y pipe on back fabricated next week for my L03, but I don't want to run into a no parts available issue.

This is a spacer for the HO manifolds to Y-pipe connection. You will already have a spacer for your L03 manifold- y-pipe connection I'm assuming. You would gain some HP by going over to these better HO manifolds yourself and they are easy to find +cheap. The spacer was the hardest thing I had to run down. I'm going to trash my old L03 manifolds and y-pipe. Ive already got 3in exhaust on the rest.

Ok, that's good for the moment. I was considering ceramic coated 1 5/8" shorties if I were going to replace the stock manifolds. I've had good luck with headers on sbc engines in the past. Easy to reach plugs, I can access them from under the hood, instead of under the car. I re torqued about 3 times, and the bolts stay tight, and no leaks. I'd go with long tubes, but there doesn't seem to be enough room for the collectors. I would have to delete the AIR tubes also. What a mess.
Lots of reasons to go with headers mainly being HP. I'm not trying to get maximum HP out of this primarily "showcar" so the simplicity of manifolds are better suited for what I have.

I understand what you mean. I've never considered my 92 as a numbers matching correct type of car, although it is in excellent condition.

Man my old car is a combination of parts from Thirdgens from New York to Utah! Lol. I'm serious, Ive bought a lot of my parts here on Thirdgen. Nothing numbers matching about it but I like it.

Well, it looks great, maybe you could talk to it with a wrist band :-) I would like 3.42's and a higher stall.
Ive got an S10 converter which gives me around22-2400 stall, built tranny w/shift kit and 3.73s. Made a dramatic seat of pants difference. 3.42s or even 3.23s would be a better choice of gearing though for sure. Only gave like $129 for converter man it was a great deal.

Yes, I have the 273's in mine. Very long legs. Did you change the shift ratio?

Glad I could be of help Dustin!. I am with you on this, sacrifice some ponies for convenience and look!

You would benefit greatly from a gear change. I have 3:42's with what I believe is a stock converter No shift ratio change either. If you highway drive I recommend the 3:23 or 42's If you city drive the 3:73 will perform best. It is just my opinion that 373 is a little steep to run 80 or so.
This thread should be a sticky lol, lots of good info.
My buddies IROC recently outgrew it's Hedman shorties and Y pipe. I got them for next to nothing but I'm not sure if I should use them. The Y pipe has a 2.5" high flow cat attached. Would a Magnaflow Y pipe and adding a 3" cat to it be a better setup or am I fine with the Hedman stuff.
My TBI car is going to stay stock for a long time. So far all it has is a 3" SLP dual/dual muffler. I got a Walker 46669 line to install once everything goes on.
I got my HO manifolds yesterday and just want to give a shout out to NoEmissionsTA. Man did he do me right, Cleaned. painted and even made custom air tube plugs from a old set of tubes he had laying around.
I am going to purchase the y pipe next. I see the one from MAC is 2.5" primary tubes into 3" tube. The Dynomax pipe is 2.25" into 3" tube. My Ho manifolds have a 2.25" outlet. My question is do you see a benefit in the larger primary tubes?

I just placed the order for the Magnaflow pipe and found it through these guys....http://raceconsultingagency.com/..... I saved $25 over Summit's price and it was free shipping!
Dude! Looks like a Russian webpage designed to collect credit card info! I hope I'm wrong. LOL. My MAC pipe has not yet arrived and my vendor has gone silent. I may need to switch up. Dude. $180! that's a great price.

Damn I hope not! The page did look generic, but I did not find any collusion or obstruction! Maybe Nancy and crew should look into this for me!
I know, I thought the cost was a typo but I got confirmation on the order and it is $180.13 total. I also went through PayPal on this one for some added protection. I did get scammed in the past on something like this and PayPal covered it. It was a false company that took my money and never sent a product.

RCA is legit, no need to worry.
The only issue is that they may or may not really have the parts in stock. I placed an order with them a couple months ago for some Koni yellows and a few Energy Suspension parts. AFTER my credit card was charged they told me the Koni's were on backorder until mid August. They refunded my money no problem, though.
I intend to give them another try - their prices are the lowest on the internet. I've been eyeing the Magnaflow Y-pipe as well and that price is really attractive!
Ah, didn't mean to spook you Vinny! You can always call your credit card company and get your $$ back. Don't use a debit card ever. I called Beefcake Racing and switched up to the Magnaflow also. Apparently MAC is way messed up right now with their computer warehousing and no ship date in sight. Plus I think the Magnaflow looks a little better flow-wise.
