Help stranded

Muffler shop pulled off my Y pipe and the donut gaskets fell apart and new ones don’t fit. 3.1l V6. The old one uses a metal ring and gasket. they can’t find a replacement gasket. Anybody have a part number? Car isn’t driveable and it is a 25 mile walk home.

Re: Help stranded

Is the donut's thickness intact, to where they could cut a piece of pipe a bit thicker than the donut's thickness, ball-shape the end that will fit into the y-pipe's flared flange, just like the donut gasket would fit, use some exhaust sealant on the top and bottom of the new piece of pipe, "seat" it into the top of the y-pipe, then bolt the y-pipe to the manifold? As long as it's tight and doesn't leak, then you could probably even keep it in there permanently as a new donut gasket.

Re: Help stranded

Tell the exhaust shop to pay for your car to be towed to a competent exhaust shop.

Re: Help stranded

Two problems. I am in rural communities and this shop is the only one in the area. Second, I don't think it is his fault that every parts place has the wrong gaskets listed. I have checked and just got lucky that I found one that might work. Even the Chevy dealer parts guy couldn't find the right part. I don't have the money to have him custom make a Y pipe to replace the factory one that might use a different donut gasket.

This appears to be the correct one (Fel-Pro 60538) after hours and hours of searching for anybody that may have the same problem. The shop is working me back into their schedule to see if they will work. I will update this once the problem is solved.

Re: Help stranded

So, I just talked to the muffler shop last night. The guy said that the sleeves fit ok on these Fel-Pro gaskets but the taper for the cupped side is not quite right. He said it looks like they squished out slightly but should work and is finishing up the cat back pipes and muffler today. Should have the car back later today.

Anxious to see if the car is back to running normal without all the exhaust leaks. I am guessing the computer wasn't able to keep up with the variability of the O2 sensor and was running rich. I am also hoping the Code 32 and back fire through the exhaust is gone since I have had those ever since I had a performance muffler put on the car. Going back to stock mufller on this change even though the old muffler still had some life left.

Re: Help stranded

I got my car back and it not only sounds much better, it runs way better. No more back firing through the exhaust. I still get a Code 32 but not nearly as frequently. Since it was running way rich with the exhaust leaks, I will pull the EGR valve and clean it to see if the Code 32 finally goes away. Had to order a gasket for the EGR valve since the 92 uses the electronic EGR valve.
