I have an '85 TA with a crate 350 sbc and standard exhaust. I've added a Flowmaster 80 series muffler and connected the tailpipes with adaptors and clamps. The pipes are 2.25" and the muffler is 2.5" ID. I would like to ditch the adaptors (and half the clamps) and get tailpipes that are 2.5" OD. I'm having a heck of a time finding them. Anyone know where I could get such something like this for a reasonable price? I'm in Canada.
Would it be expensive to custom make them? What about something like these Walker ones? They are meant for the Walker muffler but the diameter seems correct. Would the exhaust shop be more expensive?
I think that you'd have to visit a few exhaust shops, show them what you want, then get pricing and see where the cost will falls.
When ever I want to do things like this, I just buy mandrel bends and straight pipe sections and cut/weld the exhaust that I want. Those pipes you linked, I'd pass on those, b/c they're turn-downs, which I dislike, on F-bods. Also, we don't know what muffler they were intended to go on, thus we don't know if the placement of the 90 bend is located correctly to put the tips in the right place and the same place on both sides. Ya don't know until you get 'em in your hands, get under the car and line them up w/your muffler outlets. So those pipes could be a cheap/easy win?....or a waste of time and shipping. A shop will get it done on the first try, b/c they'll do what I'd do...build it to fit. But that'll undoubtedly cost more b/c now you're paying labor...and there is the risk that the shop doesn't do it the way you like it. To wit:
Decades ago, I had an '83 -with the stock, dual pipes over the axle into two mufflers. The pipes rotted through before the muffs so I had an exhaust shop cut the pipes at good metal (basically above the axle) and weld on straight pipes from that point, back to the rear bumper. To my horror, when it was done, both pipes were protruding from under the rear bumper about 6-8", and they were both angled somewhat down and out. It looked hideous, retarded.....embarrassin'! I ended up cutting them w/a hacksaw, flush with the rear bumper and at an angle that mitigated the appearance of the downward/outward angled pipes and lived with that until I sold the car. Someone's interpretation of what I wanted.
If you have access to, or a buddy with the tools to do it yourself, I would do it that way b/c it's cheap, fast and you get exactly what you want on the first try....not someone's interpretation of what they thought you wanted.
