SLP Install Kit ques for those who have installed....

hey guys,
i have a ques. Did you all go out and buy the SLP install kit for the headers?
I am curious if you can just get the parts cheaper yourself. I already got the
fel-pro gaskets, seeing I am told they are the best for the job ( no leaking!)
anyone go out and get their own parts? and if you did, could ya list for me?
I would greatly appreciate it!

the install kit is a waste of $, all i used was...

fel-pro gaskets
ARP bolts with 3/8's head
you will need the dounut gasket's for header/y-pipe flange although i dont have them but i wish i do. you can order them from SLP when you order the headers.

I already have the header gaskets and the flange gaskets, I even have the bolts, but what do I need is something to protect the plug wires from touching the header? It looks like SLP includes that in thier kit but thats all I need and I don't want to buy the kit just for that.....

I have the install kit, but the headers bolts look cheap. They look like they would be way too easy to round off. I am thinking about buying more bolts. I also have to replace the studs. Did anyone else have to replace the studs and if so where did you buy new ones? There are about 4 or 5 studs. Has anyone used the header bolts that come with the kit?

the collector donut gasket you will need is Fel-Pro #60986..

and i had to go out and buy some long 3/8x16 bolts, 8 of them about 1" long with locking washers, and 4 of them like 2" or longer and just cut them to fit about right. and of course the header flange gaskets, Accel shortie header plugs, and cut a spark plug socket so it fits and then just use a wrench instead of socket to turn it, 90* plug wires, and some heat shielding is good for your starter wires, and then you'll need a 90* elbow piece for the AIR tubes. and i think thats about everything. if not just ask. i had the same question as you before i installed mine, and didn't get the response that you did, but i do think its alot cheaper then getting the $80 kit from SLP.

oh and i didn't use studs, since the stock ones didn't really use studs, bolts work better

good luck and take pics

The install kit is a waste of money if you're installing non-AIR headers because most of the content is related to the AIR tubes. I got the install kit in a group purchase for $25.
I used the gaskets and bolts in the kit and have never had a problem with leaks or bolts backing out in the least. I'm glad I bought the install kit.

If you like running around searching for parts, don't buy the install
kit. But it does save time when you are in the middle of installation.

so, what I am picking up, it that if I have the air setup I should go with the
install kit, but with non-air find my own. well I already have the header
gaskets, so, i think I will just try to get my own, unless there is something
in that kit that I need for the air. damn, I hate smog laws.

SLP's $80 install kit is a big rip off. As expensive as their headers are.....the kit should be included. I bought their headers for my 97TA (previous car) for $655, for just the coated headers and y-pipe. Then I went out and bought FelPro gaskets for 20 bucks, bolts were $10-15. Since I didn't get the kit, I had to get donut gaskets from a muffler shop, and I had to fabricate my own EGR pipe.
Just for S & G's, they now charge $782.50 for the LT1 headers
