What so good about CatBack exhaust

Hey

I have a 1985 IROC Z Camaro with the 305 TPI. I am planning on doing some exhaust mods, as u can see with the other forum I have posted about hooker headers. I am wondering what is so good about CatBack exhaust systems. How are they better then the stock system. Would I get the same performance as botling on a flowmaster or hooker muffer to the stock exhaust system, or would a CatBack exhaust be better. Why...... How much more HP would I get when using a CatBack exhaust over just a flowmaster or hooker muffler on the stock exhaust system.

Thanks alot

A cat-back exhaust includes a muffler, but replaces the stock I-pipe with a 3" pipe. This allows for a better flowing exhaust, sound and performance. I'd definately get a cat-back over just a muffler. With that said, I'd recommend the Hooker.

As an estimate, I'd say you'll pick up about 10hp with a cat-back.

What Mark said. Just getting a muffler with a straight thru type of design may free up some hp, but probably nothing too noticeable. With a full catback setup, you get better flow than the smaller stock exhaust since it replaces the intermediate pipe also. There isn't really a set number of HP you will get, but it's typically something like 7-10% or something like that... don't quote me on those numbers
