straight pipe
straight pipe
I would like to have a straight pipe installed in my 350 1989 iroc. The car is stock, except for the muffler( flowmaster 80 series) and 3 inch pipe. The only problem I have is the air tube. What should I do with the air tube going into the converter? Should I cap it or leave it open? The guy at the muffler shop says that he is going to weld it to the straight pipe. Would there be a problem if this is done so? I want to keep the air tube just in case I have install a catalytic converter back on again. One last question, will this hurt or improve the cars performance, in other words is it worth it?

The AIR tube on mine is welded right to my pipe, and I don't seem to have any problems with it. As far as the straight pipe and performance, it will help, but it'll be pretty loud (cops might not like it) and it might not have the sound that you're looking for.
Is it worth it? If you can handle the noise then it's worth it.
What you could also do is just put on a hooker muffler. They flow 5% less than 2.5" open pipes, but the sound makes up for it. Then you won't have to worry about the sound police.

Thanks for the reply's, everybody. I do have a flowmaster 80 series muffler, all I want to do is eliminate the cat and install a straight pipe in its place. So welding the air tube to the straight pipe shouldn't be a problem?
I want to keep the tube, just in case I need to install a hi flow cat back onto the car(emissions check).
Thanks,
Gerry
P.S. Any futher comments will be appreciated.

I didnt even notice that before. But yeah just weld it to the pipe.
Any exhaust shop will know what to do, but if you DIY then just weld it there for future purposes.

Thanks for the info Rick. One more question, will the exhaust note be loud even with the flowmaster 80? I've heard my friends rs 305 (no cat or muffler). That car is loud! I know mine wont be as loud, but it should be louder than it is now with better performance.
Thanks,
Gerry
P.S. In the near future i'm going to get some edelbrock tes headers.

Oh yes it will be louder. I have the flowmaster 80, just put a straight pipe instead of the cat (well about 3 mos. ago) and I noticed that it got louder. The performance is hardly noticible, but is there. It's probably just a mind thing since you hear that it is louder, so must equal more HP's right.
The no cat no muffler thing sounds hideous IMHO. Thats just me though.
The TES headers should do you good also.
Have fun.

No, see Mark A Sheilds, (if that is your real name....
) he has an IROC 350, 350-on is where Flowmaster shines.
And the Aerochambers extra 4HP (if we can even believe that
) isn't gonna make that much of a difference.

Oh, and about the 4hp thing, where did you get that from, someone else say it or were you just throwing that in there?

Appearance Board thing??
The 4HP is the probable, calculated, corrected, and estimated increase in HP by switching to your exhaust.
