Smog pump
Smog pump
I have a 87 Iroc 350 TPI with several mods that include Ligenfelter Super Ram Plenum, runners and intake, Accel 300 + ignition and wires, underdrive pulleys, adjustable fuel pressure regulator (set at 48 lbs), Edelbrock headers and cat back system, and I have just gutted my cat. Great sound. Now I was Wondering if I remove the belt from my A.I.R pump would this set any codes and what happens to the exhaust gases from my headers and other lines that go to the pump? Thanks for any help you can give me.

This will make you fail emmision tests, if you have to take them. Taking the AIR's belt off won't throw any codes. The air system doesn't comunicate with the ecm it just takes orders, so actually you can remove the whole pump and the rest of that system and not get any ill effects or codes. This is what I have done to my roc, don't expect any hp gains, but it definatly can take a lot of clutter out of the engine compartment.
I passed Connecticut emmisions without a single problem, and I have no smog pump on my trans am. Actually went through better on a 140,000 305 with a new EGR and a new cat than with a goodwrench 2.8 brand new with a smog pump. My mechanic says they are a waste of space, and after watching my bird go through so well, I tend to agree.
