Sticking out on one side is not uncommon & generally not the hinges. Usually it is how the deck is attached to the glass. Hafta separate them & reattach.

I tried that. and pushed it up as far as it will go...still stucking out..There is a big gap on that side where the glass meets the body ...especialy where the bracket is at the top...I can stick my finger in there with ease, the outher side stops at my knuckle

Did you try slotting the holes in the deck to allow it to move further?

the holes arnt in the deck, the decklid has factory welded bolts on the ...the holes are in the glass, and yes upon instalation I pushed up as far as they would go before tightining, the problem is the Hinges hence that larger gap on the side between body and hatchglass

You need any of the bolts as well, or just the hinges? May have some but haven't found them yet...

I have not taken them off yet, but im sure The hardware on them should be good to go i dont see any reason why they would be bent. If you find a set let me know. Thanks

Re: Rear Hatch Hinges 82-92

For future reference,.......

When I pulled out the hinges before posting here I found that several of the pairs I had also had a spacer on them. The spacer was placed between the hatch hinge,.... and the body. Not All the hinges I had included a spacer

Factory shop manual says all adjustments are made at the top. The holes in the body are larger than the bolts and that's about all the adjustment play you have - unless you slot the holes. Adjustments at the deck-lid are not recommended.

Hinges are not perfectly flat,.... there is a intentional "bend" built into them,... so if you look at it and say, "it looks bent",.... it might be because they are supposed to look like that.

My factory manual says the very same, that adjustments are at the top by the hinges. But also my manual shows how to completely disasemble the decklid. Keep in mind that during the years that our 3rd gens where being built, I dont think GM anticipated that the hinges where gonna begin to "give" under the stress of the support lifts. I read some where here on the boards, like 3 years ago, that one member removed his hinges and put them side by side. One hinge was obviously distorted out of shape.

Re: Rear Hatch Hinges 82-92

You can easily check to see if the rear lid has slid back out of its mounting grove by inspecting both sides towards the lower edges of the lid. There is a "lip" where the glass sit in. If there is a obvious gap between the grooved lip and the bottom of the deck glass, then the lid has slid back towards the rear of the car. There is a tech article on how to remove the lid and re-adjust to fix the issue on the Homepage tech.

Re: Rear Hatch Hinges 82-92

Can you post some pics of your alignment problem begining along the top of the hatch glass to the rear quarters? There is some adjustment for the hinges inside the car that can be done and some with minor modification if metal fatigue has occured.

Re: Rear Hatch Hinges 82-92

sorry for the late reply, My gap is clearly at the driverside hinge... the gap is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wider on that side from the roof to the glass. Where do I make my adjustments?

The bolts are not factory welded. The PO probably welded them on. You can loosen the bolt from the inside and move the glass around. But first remove the bolts that hold the suppoert lifts so that there won't be much tension when loosened.

ok, are those the bolts that come in the car at about a 45* angle? yes your right when I bought the car in 2010 the PO said the back window had been smashed out and they put this glass on from a donar.

Yup. The bolts that go through the body have no bolt head. They are flat and sit inside the channel between the upper glass and the body.

Re: Rear Hatch Hinges 82-92

By all means remove the latching hardware first and then the struts. Inside at the rear, there are 4 nuts holding the hinges in place. There may be enough play in the holes to move the glass to the desired position. If not some elongation of the holes will be needed. Once the glass is in the correct position. Check the deck position.

Can you cut and copy your instructions along with the pictures? It's sort of a PITA to sign up in GTA just to see the pictures. Just a thought.

Re: Rear Hatch Hinges 82-92

Re: GTA hatch misallignment
Hatch alignment procedure or at least the way I did it.
Finally got around to replacing the old spoiler with a new fiberglass one from Hawks. Did not fit very well on passenger side (see pics below)and hatch was ¾ inch back too far

As stated above remove struts completely from car (2 people recommended as hatch is heavy.)

Use thick towels or pillows on quarter panel to set hatch on at a comfortable working height, remove spoiler, remove latch hook under deck lid. Put your finger in the latch for deck to retract it out of the way. Remove pillows or whatever lower hatch.
Make a diagram of the hatch in the way it fits on car, you will need this later.
Measure the gap at the top of hatch at top rear of car and all around the quarter panels. This must be symmetrical. If realignment is needed. Loosen the 4 nuts that hold the hatch hinges to the car NOT THE nuts in the glass. You may have to break the seal of the hinges by pushing the glass upward from the inside of the car. Retighten hinge nuts .

Now is where you need your diagram and a tape measure
Measure from left to right including center (mark these points on top of car with masking tape) to the rear of hatch including the mounting holes for the spoiler. Write those down on diagram. Measure from rear of each quarter panel to rear of hatch. (my readings wire ¾ inch on pass side and ½ on drivers side, spoiler mounting hole on pass side 3/8 too far to front vs drivers side)

Put the pillows back under the hatch glass, remove the deck carefully. It will have a lot of very stick sealant holding it in place after the nuts are removed. Can be reused if not damaged or removed and replaced with thick silicone.

Place deck upside down on a very soft surface so as not to damage paint. (now remember left is right and right is left or drivers side is now pass side) Refer back to your alignment measurements (this is how far you will have to move the mounting studs) Put some old nuts on the threads so as not to damage them.

The studs are welded to a plate that is sandwiched during assembly of the deck lid. Use lots of WD40 and a hammer and blunt chisel to GENTLY relocate the plate/studs.

Reverse process to reassemble. Depending on your measurements you may or may not have to elongate the pass side spoiler mounting hole.
