Fuel cells

Does anyone knowof a source for odd shaped fuel cells? I've got a big rectangular one, I'm just interested in options.
I'd like to find one that I can mount forward of the rear axle, Kind of where the back seat used to be, or should I just shut up and use what I have?

you can't put a fuel tank in the passenger compartment. well you can but it wouldn't be the smartest thing you ever did.

Yeah, I realize that I'd have to box it in.

On a side note, anyone know of a glass and resin combo that is impervious to gas?

Asking for it in the hatch aren't you? Summit sells a fuel cell for hotrods that will fit in the hatchwell. I just would hate to get rear ended.

As for stock fuelcells, ls1speed.com has one for fourth gens that is supposed to fit. Atleast thats what they told me. Expect to pay around 500 +shipping.

The N20 bottle in the back is more of a hazard then the aluminum cell is, with the vents it would just rupture the cell spill fuel evrywhere that would be the only big problem somebody smoking where I would get rearended

Their are wires in the back and the exhaust is right underneath the fuel cell. It might just leak onto the exhaust, not that the stock setup couldn't but its further back.

Custom

I made a custom fuel cell for my hatch that fits between the frame rails and made it so it had a sump for acclereation. It was neat but a little pricey to do and the thing holds like 13 gallons so I am happy.

I recently heard from someone on one of my doityourself boards, that fuel cells aren't street legal in most places. Anyone have any information on that?

Odds of anyone finding out about it are slim unless you have it flaunted on a plexi glass truck bed or something, but it's still good to know....

Please chime in here ....

(not necessarily on the doityourself board, but any help would be appreciated)

Legal or not? There still seems to be some clarification issues on terminology.

you can make them nice and safe in the rear. Just need to make a firewall for them. This was done to my car by the PO. Click the page in my sig and go to projecxts. You can read all about it.

Edit: figures my sig didn't work. http://www.fforce.newbedfordwebs.com/project1.php theres the link.

Plastic fuel cells are a bad idea. Putting fuel inside the car is a bad idea. I'm sure people have done both and lived, but safety stuff is not to be taken lightly. The thought makes me shudder

As long as you build an effective rear firewall, or suitably box in the cell, safety shouldn't be an issue, though legality might. I don't have one handy, but if you look in the back of any of the magazines like Street Rod Builder there are usually people listed who will build custom tanks to your specs (drawings or cardboard mockups) in stainless or aluminum, set up for whatever sending units or intaknk fuel pumps you want. Most start around $300, but have the advantage of fitting exactly where you want, and they're safe.

My sump fit great but I haven't driven my car yet to say what a difference it made.
