welding vitallium?
I have a possible neat idea for a shifter.. but the piece is made of Vitallium....which I've found out is: "An alloy of 60% cobalt, 20% chromium, 5% molybdenum, and traces of other substances"
...is that possible to weld up to anything? Maybe something that I could thread and screw on the shifter... or even weld right to the stock shifter. Got access to mig and tig stuffs...
any ideas?

Bud - Why go with the exotics? I'd have to guess it's a very hard (and probably brittle) material. Welding to it might crack it, unless it's pre-heated. I don't know anything about the material, but a quick phonecall to one of the welder companies tech lines should answer if it's weldable. Besides, getting the correct alloy weld rod will be pretty pricey. Whats wrong with a steel alloy? The shifter doesn't get hot enough to need the high-temp alloys, and shouldn't see forces high enough to go with the high strength exotics. OTOH, if you have a chunk, and want to mess with it, you can try anything.
You can tig most anything if you have a filler rod made of the proper alloy, but I've never heard of a cobalt rod. Maybe someone with more knowledge can tell you, but I lent out my book to look it up.

Got a hip joint from a metal scrap yard.... I think it'd look pretty neat as a shifter... just gotta figure out how to attatch it.

EDIT:... oh .. and it has engraved on the side: 1 7/8 Vitallium

try this site
ok I don't know the actual site address but its somthing along the lines of www.aws.org or somthing like that. its the american welding society website. just a suggestion
i doubt you find a filler metal match for it. second best bet would be to use a piece of the metal as a filler. from what i read on it it's a casting and is only used for medical applications. try welding wearhouse 800-800-1150
