Seat Relocation?

Have any of you ever changed the mounting position for your front seats? I'm thinking of fabbing up a center console that's 2 inches wider than stock. I noticed that the insides of my seat bottoms are up against the center console, and I have about 5 inches between the outside of the seats and the door panel. Also, when I sit in the middle of my seat, the steering wheel appears to be about an inch off center to the left. What I want to do is move the seats outward an inch per side. Are there any problems I should expect with grinding off the studs and putting new studs on an inch outboard? I don't know how to weld.... is it feasable to drill through the floor and use some high strength nuts, bolts and washers instead of welding studs to the floorpan brace? Thanks in advance for your input!
