Shortening torque arm using stock mount?

I have an idea..
Would it be possible to cut, weld, shorten the stock torque arm and then fab up a mount for the stock mount? I'm thinking 3-4 inches, just enough to get the mount off from the transmission and onto a custom crossmember bolted to the subframe connectors. My main concern is a possible bind.
