Hot rolled channel? Umm...yeah. That should do it. A little overkill there?

That should certainly stiffen things up, and weight them down. Fortunately, a lot or that weight will be at the rear, where it can't hurt as much. That's almost like a factory perimeter frame now.

Nice bead back at the rear LCA mount, too. You planning on painting it all?

extremely rusty on the drivers side the floorboards where rusted thru and the frame on that side was a little soft

that is not paint that is under coating i will get the rest when i can get to a hoist

They're fairly meaty sub-frames, did you fit them because your car has t-tops?
I've got spohn subs, but I haven't fitted them yet. My welding is not good enough, I'd probably melt holes everywhere.

it looks like the body would break off before the frame bends! I'd say its way overkill, but if that metal was all you had, then cool. good overhead welding.

Is that c-channel on the passenger side and box on the drivers? Do you have pictures of the car from the side? How visible are they?

Otherwise… nice welds and hey, whatever works. On one of my brother’s old cars we used some 2x4 channel from large equipment racks a TV station was throwing out…

What thickeness is the square tubing you used, i.e. what how thick's the actual wall of each tube ? And what's the weight ?

Reason I'm asking is I've been holding off on my SFC project, since the round tubing I got, may be way too heavy, the wall thickness is almost .25. A hmm 6 foot section or so of it, weights 18 lbs

wow that 84 looks identical to the one i had, how long have you had it ?

here is the 84 i had:





this was a couple or three years ago now since i sold the car, and it didnt have the connectors under it or the blue oil pan lol

apparently they sold a bazillion brown and gold 84 z-28 i keep seeing them all over now all of a sudden



those are some badass connectors now, i need to make a set for the 82

i have had mine for about 3 years now and when i bought it it was a steaming pile. it had a bad dent and rust in the driver 1/4 panel. the passenger 1/4 had rust and a lot of bondo. also the driver door was nothing but waves so i replace all those and fixed the other imperfections and painted it, i had the guy put a little extra flake in it also.

about the exhaust i had someone bend it for me

that's funny i don't see them anywhere, maybe in my lifetime i have seen 10 different brown third gens

Those side rails look much like the 2"x4" South Side Machine SFCs I had welded into my '86 IROC about 8yrs ago.

They really helped with weight transfer and hook on launch.

They rely did seam to improve my launch, even with the 215 i have on there now it only spins bad when i want it to. They also got rid of most of my creaks and rattles.

The SFC are not too bad of a job there. Obviously home built but still should work pretty good.

As some of you might have seen my other thread 1982 Silver State Project. Once I get the new frame rails fabricated up. I'll put some pictures of the frame connectors as they are getting built. To attach the SFC to the body I am going to use 7 ga P&O (approx 3/16" thick) and the body of the SFC will be 1 3/4" DOM tubing that is .135 wall. I will show bending of the SFC tubes in my JD square bender. They will be welded with a Miller 250 amp mig welder. I'll also probably sell them once I get the design finished and installed. I want to work out the bugs before selling anything. They will be a weld in design and no provisions for bolt in.

The SFC that go into my car will also have supports to attach to my new frame rails to support the new transmission cross member. You'll see all of that as stuff becomes done in my thread.

FWIW, I used 1.75" x .120" wall tube mounted to 1/8" plate on the LCA brackets. .250" is too thick IMO, but it's up to you.

That is very nice looks just like how I did mine. I had a few slight differences. But yeah we should have a demo durby and see whos overkill subframe connecters impale the other guy first.
