I've search but could not seem to find just what time looking for. Im putting a fiberglass cowl hood on my stock steel hood, im just wondering how much of the old steel to cut out. If i cut out to much how can i re-enforce it. So im looking for how far down and how wide to cut out. Please help dont want to F this up cause i dont have access to another hood

The main purpose of a cowl hood is for clearance. It also provides a cold air, high pressure area from the base of the windshield.
Typically, your "aftermarket" air filter will stick above the hood line. You cut a hole big enough for the air filter to stick through. This will allow the filter to get the fresh air from the cowl and keep out the engine heat from underneath.
If you have a TPI system which draws air from the front of the car, a cowl hood is strictly decoration.
Mine is completely open. My air filters stick above the cowl and into the aeroscoop part. I have a sheetmetal plate attached to the underside of the filter bases which seals to the bottom of the cowl part. There's foam glued to the underside of the cowl to seal to the plate.

My air cleaner stays under the stock hood im doing it for heat as well as the air for the intake, but sence my aircleaner stays below the stock hood should i look into a carb spacer or an airgap intake, or should i make some sort of shroud to go around the aircleaner and somehow attach it to the cowl. anyone with pictures of how much of the the hood is missing in theirs

I just went with the air induction hood from the early '80s models.
