I don't let friends lean on my console though just incase (not to mention the car hardly has passengers and those passengers know my cars more important then anything). and I sanded the vynal down so the filler would stick.
I'm not concerned about it adhering, if done properly, fiberglass shouldn't have to adhere to anything. I just don't think the fiberglass filler has the strength of regular mat or cloth. If you had built the lid out of wood, then it would support the weight on its own. Using the vinyl means that when you lean on it, all the weight is pressing down on the filler. Instead of it just pushing into the wood, it presses into vinyl, which gives. So now there's no support under your filler and it just cracks.

as for the paint its "wrinkle" paint, it wrinkles up after a few hours to match factory texture, Ive actually had people see it and ask about it thinking it was factory.
<shrug> Eventually it will start to fade at the least. That's just the nature of paint. It looks better than upholstery though, IMHO. I'm not sure how well it matches the rest of your car though.

and I dont know what you guys are talking about, I put it far enough back so that I can still use the arm rest as an arm rest... I couldn't put it in the shiftplate for multiple reasons, mainly I would be concerned about all the electrical wires.. and liquid sitting there is just asking for havoc.
Well from the pictures you posted, it appears to be right smack dab in the center of the arm rest. What else do we have to go on? I would think it would have been more efficient to put it all the way to the rear or all the way to the front, whichever is more convenient to still let you rest your arm on it.

I don't think there are any wires under the console except for lights and the shift indicator.

basically what I did was take junk parts that I had and made something unique that Im proud of. oh and its 100% functional...
Which is all great, but do you want me to just pat you on the back, or tell you what you could have done to make it better? Mat would have been better. Taking the vinyl off would have been better.

And even if YOU choose to take offense to what I said.. someone else will read this, and when they do theirs, they will make up for these weaknesses.

Re: cup holder in Trans Am

nah I see where your coming from, if I came off as seeming to have taken offense I just had a rough day yesterday. but now I see what you mean about the filler cracking, and I 100% think it would have been better if I did it another way, however aslong as I dont abuse it it should be fine.
as for the positioning, I basically put it where I didnt have much modifying to do to the console itself.
my car has wires for the shift indicator light, ebrake grounds, power mirrors and power windows. plus those switches are right where you'd have to put the cup holder.
and Im not concerned, all paint fades, aslong as it lasts a year or two Im happy, Ill probably get bored with the textured paint and lay some black base/clear down in the future anyway.
tomorrow Im gonna get some pics of my interior so you guys can have some better imput on the subject..

I'd have to say you deserve it for being careless. I mean seriously, that's the risk you take when you drink in your car anyways.

There's just as good a chance of an odd size cup tipping out of the factory cup holder in my Silverado as there is of some idiot forgetting to take the pop out of this guy's console and just flipping it open like its his first time.

Wasn't it painted black originally? Did you repaint it or upholster it?

Looks good!

the glossy black was just the paint while it was drying, I posted those pics because it showed how straight the body work was lol
it dryed textured, its a pretty cool paint if I do say so myself.

I own an 85 Z28, and was actually thinking of doing something like this in the blank area behind the ahtch/window switches.

You know how some of the camaros had a clock in the console? I'm thinking of putting a cupholder in that spot...

Is that texturized paint uncomfortable under your arm? SEM makes a texturized paint that lays down like stock plastic. Saw an example somewhere. Didn't look too bad.

You know what, you guys are right. He should have not done this mod because people are too stupid to move a drink before opening a console.

Man, no offense intended to anyone on this thread but why do so many thirdgen owners let the entire insides of their cars get COVERED in dust and dirt?

It really bothers me...

Re: cup holder in Trans Am

it only happens in the winter. i don't bother detailing the interior bc i live in NY and we get a decent amount of snow every winter. that tracks in all the sand they put down on the roads. in the spring, summer, and fall my car is spotless. the first big spring cleaning i do takes me all morning and afternoon bc i do the entire interior and exterior.

believe me, it bothers me too, it's just not worth all my time in the winter when its going to be just as dirty in a week.

The only concern I have is for your paperwork in the compartment..... on hot days the condensation will leak into the bottom..... I know... I know .... put a napkin in it! But if there is any holes or cracks of any sort it will leak into it..... with or without the napkin.... JMO!

Real simple...If it sat very deep into the lid, it might hit o its way up, moving in the arc.

And don't even TRY to deny that SOMEBODY will get in a hurry, open the lid, with a drink in it, and thereby turning the drink onn its side & basically POUR the drink out of the cup/can/pop top drive through cup. I fully see that happening in a lid mounted cup holder.

Re: cup holder in Trans Am

Its not so much about being in a hurry,as it is driving/watching the road/thinking of something else, etc.

Besides...If your cup is full, what are you gonna do with the cup, while digging through the console? Set it between your legs? Set it in the other seat?

Well... If it's a beer you wouldn't dare attemp to spill it, so moving it from the cup holder would not be mandatory.

well who would have an open beer in their car? that illegal in CT, not sure about any other states.

but I have never had to open my center console in a hurry or had to open it while driving. I could however see when you get pulled over and you need to get your registration out, since you might be a little flustered you may forget about the drink... I don't plan on being quite that stupid though!

too many people did the 4th gen console (for good reason, they look nice) but I like to stick out from the crowd but not have anything look ridiculous (like body kits and such)... I wanted something GM could have done.. hence the Camaro gfx, the 4th gen ram air hood, and the cup holder and the future 355 it will have.
and my remark to the beer was semi sarcastic because I figured you were just joking.

i had to put 2 screws into the console- it seemed like the most secure way of attaching it. i'm sure there would be a way to do it without drilling holes. it's cheap enough and it fits perfectly. it'd be worth experimenting with different ideas on how to mount it.

I used to have the same one...I used some strong double-sided sticky tape.

I have since pulled it ff my console, because I didn't like where I had it. You can't tell it had ever been there.
