There is no specific location that the a-pillar bars need to be. Figure out where they fit the best and weld them in. Typically they'll go beside or just behind the door frame. It depends how you want them to go through the dash or if you want them to stay outside of the dash.
No firewall cutting is required unless you have forward bars that need to go through the firewall.

cam3x48pro, I have the same kit. I am going to work on it some today so i'll take some pics if i remember. I did not have to modify the firewall, but i did have to notch out the two tabs with the studs that the front of the dash mounts to. As I mentioned on a previous post, I think these two bars are the hardest part of the cage, because the top notch ends up being kind of complex. just watch out because the passengers side floor is like 2" higher than the drivers side, so don't really base too many measurements off of it, or it will mess you up -- I wound up with a gap and I had to reconstruct the tube slightly (which is no real biggie).

Here is a picture of how I have mine. I don't have the upper dash pad trimmed to fit yet, but the front part of the dash only required a tiny bit of trimming on the upper corner where the stud is. If you are looking for finished pictures, try looking at http://www.cardomain.com/ride/487725/7 -- it's greezemonkeys cardomain page; I used it for some reference when I started mine.

yeah i got mine butted right up to the trim panel on the a-pillar. it takes a little time and patience to get it fitted just right but in the end its worth it.
