Sand or soda blaster. . .

Iv been really interested in getting a soda blaster but iv seen universal soda blast conversion kits for pressurized sand blasters, it would be great to get a sand blaster and be able to use soda type media with it but still be able to blast with harder abrasives like sand. my main uses for it would be to do a set of doors, fenders, rockers and other odds and ends with soda. im sure id find many other uses for it down the road sand or soda wise so that said iv seen some decent ones like Eastwood's for $300
http://www.eastwood.com/soda-blaster...t-w-media.html

but iv seen sand blasters for even less the only thing is a conversion kit for soda media, from the looks of it one could be put together for less then what they sell for. has anyone done it?

Looking for input or experiences with either

Make one like the guy in the link below did. It is made of all wood and he says it is holding up well. I think he is using glass beads. The biggest issue he is having is the plexiglass window keeps getting foggy from abrasives hitting it.

Based on some of the fab work I have seen you do, it seems like building a cabinet would be easy. It would definitely be cheaper.

I'm not sure if this would be usable with both sand and soda, but here is a really cheap small scale soda blasting setup someone made. It was linked from a motorcycle site that I frequent.

Re: Sand or soda blaster. . .

I have a blaster like that and have the hose fed into a home made cabinet. Works good with the exception of having to constantly re-fill the tank with media (still more efficient than the old siphon unit I had). I haven't tried soda with it yet, but it works excellent with glass - just make sure you run the media through a screen if you are recycling it as that tip clogs easily.

Regardless of what is said, soda will siphon, it's just difficult to keep it from soaking up moisture in the air.

Re: Sand or soda blaster. . .

looking at this subject more. its just cheaper to get a Haber freight sand blaster and a Eastwood soda converter. and use soda media. i think that will be my plan

siphon,

it seems like thats all the Eastwood kit does, and the Eastwood soda blaster model is a sand blaster with there converter... all it does is siphon? even tho its spouse to be a pressurized unit?

No, I believe you are you are talking about the pressure unit, I was just saying that soda will siphon through the cheap blasting gun - I got one on ebay a while back for around $8.

Harbor Freight has a soda blaster, last time I looked at it, it was about $80.

That is the handiest thing I have ever seen. Now I know how to do my weld prep without the need for a full on sand blaster.

Although it would look strange buying baking soda in bulk, but I can live with that.

You don't have to use the small box haha. You can buy 50lb bags of blasting soda.
