Re: chin spoiler mod

That is sweet just a little adjustment and it makes it unique, I might try this after i get my fuel tank put back in and my cowl hood modified...I want to cut the cowl and make it a ram air style...

Re: chin spoiler mod

I like it! If you fill in the little corner edge that you can see from an angle in the third picture it'll look even more finished. Maybe also put some kind of bottom on that cut section to help support it... without that it may flex significantly when driving.

I like it too! Who would've thought such a small mod would make such a big difference?

Re: chin spoiler mod

You need to rebuild the bottom of the spoiler to make it look like a pro job, but nothing a little fiberglass work wont fix. Looks good.

This is kinda cool actually, as most of us scrape the roads regularly with the chin spoilers, this might reduce that significantly.

Re: chin spoiler mod

I like it. Trying to visualize how to drop the two outer sections down instead of cutting the center out. your way is probly the best / easiest to upgrade the allready great looking GFX. This seems like a tastfull modd great job dude.

thanks guys!

originally i wanted to extend the ground effects like you mentioned. i wanted to go all the way around and just exaggerate the factory lines. like on the rockers going wider and lower on the ends and tapering to stock in the middle. but good luck finding a used set for a decent price that you are just going to cut up anyways!!

Did you ever take off the stock part? After he did that cut, he was left with a hole. That area is hollow, not built up. You'll see it in the later pictures he posted.

Fiberglass won't fix that. It isn't flexible enough and it will just crack, especially when bonded to the original plastic part. I know, I tried to repair mine that way. He could fiberglass the whole part and it would probably work, but it probably wouldn't be as durable if he were to scrape on the curb or something as the flexible stock piece.

And I don't think an epoxy bond will work either because the area is just too big. A plastic weld is probably what's in order at this point or some other kind of chemical bond. I've seen some photoshops of this in the past, but I don't remember seeing anyone do this before aside from some steel pieces done in some old body work books I've seen.

One of the photoshops entailed lengthening the original spoiler and THEN making the cut, the result of which gave the front spoiler an aggressive knife edge look.

There was also a company doing a kit at one time that did a variation on this mod, only they molded it into the bumper cover and changed the whole front fascia.

Could have been, it does say Iroc on the spoiler. Might even say iroc ii, hard to tell from those pics. There have been tons of mods and kits, etc. over the years. Originally I joined this board back in '98, but my account was deleted at one point due to a board swap or something, I don't remember. Over the years I've just collected pics of all the different things I've seen. Some of the kits aren't offered anymore, some of them were only hearsay back when they were originally posted. The Danko kit for example. I found one pic on their web site, and nothing else. Never heard of anyone actually purchasing it.

I got rid of my camaro nearly 6 years ago, so I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about this place as I once was, and I'm not crazy about the percentage of stock ***** here. I'm probably not up and up on the newer offerings in the last 4 years or so.

LOL! Imo, anyone can have a "stock" car. What you do to the car is what makes it "yours".

Obviously with any public forum, everyone has the right to voice their own opinions. I guess it only bothers me when some kid starts a thread about a modification he did, and then posts a few pictures to show off all his hard work and satisfaction that he got from it. It's when some purist then comes along and says something very negative about it and bashes the kid for cutting into HIS OWN car. Now on the other hand, if the threads starts off with "What do you think?....well that's completely different!

I couldn't have said it better myself!!!

Ok, now back to the topic.......I think that small little modification you did gives it enough of change to make it look pretty good. Great Job man.....way to go!!! Something I'd probably do though, is use some sort of countersink screws instead of the ones you have on it now. It would make it much easier to put a smooth finish over.

Also, that picture of the dark blue IROC II above,....it kinda reminds me of a 87-88 "Fiero-GT" with one of their aftermarket chin spoilers.

the screws wont be staying. i couldnt get any kind of clamp on the pieces to hold them while the glue dried so i used those.

Yes, I removed that part from a camaro i parted out several years ago and I know it's hollow. That's exactly why the corner where it was cut needs to be filled in with a small vertical section so you can't see that it's hollow looking at it from an angle.

Also, I agree with what you said about fiberglass not being the right tool for this job. Urethane isn't easy to modify; I looked at doing some modifications to my front bumper cover and decided it wasn't worth it.

Re: chin spoiler mod

I just had an idea. Instead of cutting the bottom off, why not cut a section out of the top, then move the whole piece up. That way the center still has the factory finished look on the botom.

Yeah but you'd still have to fill in the corners. still might make for less repair tho. you wouldnt have to drill and screw the base as he did to reglue it. you just might have something going here
