Custom DIY Machining Thread
Re: Custom DIY Machining Thread
Which pulley? If you're talking about something as big as a crank pulley, yeah it can be done, but thats a big chunk of aluminum to start with. an alternator pulley sounds like it would keep me entertained for a while tho. Same with the alternator bracket, I could take a stab at it if its 2D and made out of something like 1/4" flat.
Keep in mind, I'm not making any claims about my ability on these machines, so if I attempt one of these projects, its mostly for my own entertainment/experience. If I should happen to come up with a good part, sure I'll ship it to ya. That should probably be enough to dissuade you from buying a 10"dia x 3" Al billet to send for me to try to make you a new crank pulley, or even expecting me to be able to make it at all
. Something as small as an alt. pulley I can get stock for from the scrap bin.
I should try to make a shift **** for my auto trans. Nobody makes and sells those for the factory shifter that I know of. Stealthroc, do you have a pic of the one you made?

Here ya go, the only pic I have right now. Just remember, you need a button too, otherwise you will have to push the whole **** down lol. Took about an hour to make.

The MAF housing is now a decoration untill I get into prom burning.

I have a small spare alt pulley its about 2-3in tall I need something a little smaller to turn it quicker. If youre interested shoot me a pm. I have one on the car so no rush. On the bracket if the new pulley doesnt charge the batt right Ill have to make up some kind of template and send it so I can use a larger alt.

Never thought about pullies, shouldn't be hard unless I want to do something fancy.

Pulleys can be easily done on a manual lathe & manual mill and quickly too. The only tool that would have be made is a tool for the serpentine grooves. Just need a dial indicator, a rotary table for the mill, and a few basic machine tools & you'll have a pulley in about 2hrs.
Or if you wanted to be really fancy, find out what the eccentricities are and do it all on a manual lathe with a four jaw chuck. Personally, it'd be a pain to do a bolt pattern on the four jaw. Much easier on a rotary table.
