Uses for an LS1

I've tried posting this a few times over the last few months. Hopefully it works this time.

Long story short since I'm tired of typing it up. '02 LS1, 4L65e meets sprint car... GO!

PLUS

Add a few inches to the frame for the trans. As well as some 22" Hoosiers.

It's a good ride on the street.

As well as the track.

However the torque breaks the trans extension.

It's good for 6.9s in the 1/8 so far on a stock LS1.

Not mine but helped a friend build it. Car is for sale or can be ordered. We just finished a second and parts are being gathered for a 3rd.

Re: Uses for an LS1

the torque didn't break the trans, the twisting of the chassis/engine/trans broke it because you solid mounted the trans instead of poly mounted it.

I agree it is very cool. But this thread will probably get locked because it is not 3rd gen firebird/camaro specific.

I agree! Get a poly mount on the trans and you will be good! Its a cool idea!

Fair enough. However it's making the Firebird feel inferior. I suppose I should have thrown in that helping build that car as started a whole slew of things like wiring/suspension/LS1 swap thoughts running through my head. I shouldn't have passed up the $300 5.3 that was for sale a while back. It may still be around. They do pretty good with a cam/turbo.

If you look closely the tail housing its broke after the mount. Although the motor/trans is solid mounted, the rearend is (was) actually attached to the trans via a ~20" torque tube similar to a torque arm and allows for twist and up-down pivoting.
Track goo + 22" slicks + burnout = Snap. When the car hooked after the burnout he though he got rearended. Wish I got a video because it's crazy seeing a 230lb man being thrown around in a 5pt. harness like a rag doll.

No you're not looking at the pic properly, the motor torqued over and the trans is solidly mounted and snapped the housing. You tried to flex the trans housing and it had no where to go and snapped. My trans doesn't snap every time I do a burnout or launch a LOT harder than that thing.

Makes perfect sense.

Re: Uses for an LS1

Toss a $20 energy suspension poly trans mount in there and it should live for years happily.

I can't imagine what that thing is like to drive.

You're nuts man! That's crazy fast in that thing!

Re: Uses for an LS1

xpndbl3 I understand what you are trying to say and it would make sense if it didn't have solid motor mounts. I'm sure you are running more power and it works out for you just fine. I'm also sure I don't have to look at the picture "properly" because I took it. However to remedy the situation we mounted the torque tube to the frame instead of the transmission.

Hopefully make it out next year and get some better numbers. But I've got my feet wet as far as going through a wiring harness and it's time to pull extra wires out of the Firebird this spring.

Re: Uses for an LS1

My motor moves over 1/2" with "solid" mounts, everything flexes in the chassis, until I motor plate it in the car. Trust me on the solid mounts, even in our tube chassis cars we race, the trans mount location is not solid mounted because we broke trans cases as well. $20 part is a lot cheaper for peace of mine than snapping another case.
