S10 door handle swap need some help

Hey guys i just picked up some used doors for my bird to fix the rusted out ones i have and the hole punched in there the cylinder lock was when the car was stolen. I always wished the door handles looked better and I like the S10 handles.

My question is, the S10 handles that i find on say rock auto/autozone etc don't come with the lock cylinders... do the stock 3rd gens fit? where do i get the lock cylinders for these handles?

no one? I keep finding the door handles but not the tumblers. Only place that seems to have the tumblers is LMC truck and they want like $110 before shipping for the handles and locks with keys.

Not sure if anyone has done s10 door handles. Id "imagine" they'd be the same but that's a complete guess. Maybe find some dimensions online? Or even buy them and test fit it, doesn't work then return them!

Re: S10 door handle swap need some help

When I did mine (or had them done for me) 16yrs ago, I ended up with 2 "door" keys. 1 for the doors & 1 for the hatch. So my door keys were the S10 keys. And remember.....The doors will need to be cut & the S10 pocket welded in.

Re: S10 door handle swap need some help

Blackenedbird, yours was the thread I saw. I also saw it on a white camaro i believe.

Can it be done without the pockets? Reason is that I dont have access to any yards where they will let me cut a door apart lol. Nore will i spend the money on a shell just to get the steel around it.

I ordered 2 new door handles from 1AA auto and ive seen new tumblers/keys on ebay and they say they fit the 95 S-10, jimmy and blazer. They look right too but they say when you do the "will it fit my application" that it wont fit the S-10. Not sure whats going on there.

Also with the new doors Im planning on removing the inner fender supports to lower the weight of the door. Im not worried about the door being part of the structure of the door bc i have 2 sets of subframes and an 8pt roll bar. More about just lightening the door to its easier to open and drop alittle weight for the track. Anyone done this? and does it affect the door skin strength? will it flex more?

Re: S10 door handle swap need some help

I suppose it would be possible to create the needed lip for the plastic of the handle to set on & build a pocket behind it, but certainly would be easier to find a S1 at a yard that you could cut the pieces out of. Maybe a S10 that was hit broadside & the door was junk anyways? If they are picky, maybe wait to find a 2nd truck that way to cut it too?

It was awesome when I got mine. They loaned me the gas powered, 12" disc body "saw" to use to cut them out! Not eager to hafta do it with extension cords & my 4" grinder now. I wanna do it again but haven't tried. Too many other things my car needs first right now.

If you cut the inner panel out it will become more flimsy & twist when you put on the corner, like when opening or closing the door. I can see cutting some out for lightening the door, but not 100% & I'd certainly use at least an aluminum panel for the door panel on the inside to return some rigidity to it. That might allow you to cut out a little more than if you left it bare.

Re: S10 door handle swap need some help

When I said I was going to remove the support in the door im talking about the heavy tubing and thick supports on the backside of the outer door skin. There's brackets that are spot welded to the ends of the door and connected by a heavy tubing. This bar is permanent epoxied to the skin which gives the doer a stronger base and protects the ppl inside from side impact crashes. GM did this for that reason and to make it a structural part of the car... since our cars are so weak structurally wise. Not a prob wit mine since the car is beefed up. So removing it would drop weight and make the doors easier to open/close. I was just wondering about the door skin flexing bc the bar wouldn't be there if it was pushed in on.

My car will still have the shell and functioning windows /locks. Also I have aluminum door panels

Oh that....I think it is just in the later year cars for crash standard requirements, so you'd be fine without. If you lean on the outside then yeah....I can see it caving in if you pressed car, same as the fenders or quarter panels would. Go for it. You have enough structure built into your car now that they are just extra weight.
