4th gen coolant overflow in my IROC

On my '94 Z28, I relocated the battery to the trunk and had to relocate the coolant reservoir for turbo piping, so I ended up with a spare 4th gen coolant overflow. I picked up a clean '89 IROC last summer with a blown head gasket, so I figured Id clean up the engine bay a bit while I was doing other repairs.

The only drop of rust on the car was the battery tray, so I planned on having to address that area anyway. I originally planned on cutting a small hole in the tray to drop the coolant over flow in, but I realized that it wouldnt fit since the tray is recessed and would put the tank tube too far into the fender. So I cut out the rusty tray and did a test fit on where the overflow would work best

Then I made up a new sheet metal plate that would level off the area and support the overflow.

I used cardboard cutouts of the overflow tank opening on the 94, as well as the battery tray, in order to get the proper hole spacing

I welded a nut on the underside of the plate for the battery tie down and drilled a hole for the overflow tank to bolt to the car

The stock battery hold down was never any good, so i threaded some round bar to fit the metric size that the stock hold-down bolt uses. I built my own battery hold down bar on the 4th gen, so I had the one that came with my battery box left over for use here.

This shows how tucked in the new reservoir is compared to the spot on the wheelwell it used to dominate

I'll weld in my plate once I have time to prep the engine bay for a re-paint to blue, but for now its bolted in and ready to go

that's some great work, nice upgrade. I've been looking to add one of these tanks myself. another thing on the "to do" list that never seems to end.....

Thanks. I see you're doing a 6.0 swap, thats on my 'to do' list with this car. My z28 and my avalanche are now both iron block LS based, so I figure a 6.0/T56 iroc would consolidate my spare parts. But for now I just had to fix this head gasket, ditch the excess brackets/tubes in my way, and clean up the wheelwells for my own sanity.

I have a spare washer fluid reservoir from my 4th gen as well, so I suppose that and my borla exhaust swap will be next for the car.
