Re: HUD
LPE was selling a HUD add on display at one time that was small and easly to install. As compared to a vette,GP,ect... With the thickness and flat dash pad it would be super easly to install!

Sorry man not trying to bash but that thing is butt ugly!
There are many other companies that have nicer thin ones that can be flashed into the dash.

Re: HUD
Check out mp3car.com. There are some smart guys over there that were trying to sort this out awhile back. They have some good info and have lots of tests and tinkering going on.
Simple answer...its not easy to just retrofit a HUD unit in. Im not sure Ive seen anyone pull it off and have it work/look right. Its been discussed on here a few times...but nothing ever really surfaces, atleast that I can remember.

Re: HUD
that darker patch is a special reflective coating that allows the light to reflect properly without just bleeding through the glass.
the angle and curvature of the windshield also has alot to do with the way it shows up.

Re: HUD
It's possible but definitely won't be easy or quick. I have most of the parts to attempt it (94 Bonneville HUD, connectors, wiring diagrams for both cars, spare junk dashpad, filler, paint). It looks like where you would want to mount it is kind of in the way of the defroster. To mount correctly, it is probably necessary to cut the dash assembly as well.
I have installed HUD's in other cars, it is not very hard. The easy part is hooking it up and having it display. The hard part is cutting, mounting, fitting, filling, and making it look good. I don't know if this would work with cars that have a speedo cable. Our VSS puts out a 4000 ppm signal, you need a HUD from a vehicle that is the same ppm. A HUD windshield is not required but the image may be dim in direct sunlight.

Re: HUD
Some one did something kinda like this over at mp3car but he took a 10" vga screen and made an led back light. He did all the math to make it sunlight readable and took in to count loss though the lcd and reflecting off the wind screen. He went so far as to set up a simple dimmer using a 555 timer so it was well readable in daylight and not blinding in moonlight. The screen(projector)has to be mounted at 90* to the viewing surface and the display had to be mirror(invert x) by means of softwear driver. There is a ghosting that shows up when you use it on a normal wind screen and to fix this he used a 20" screen protector for a laptop on the inside of the glass.
the car he did it in was a '91 firebird.
He says its really simple when you get down to it and you brake it down and dont take it on as one unit because you have a led driver(the dimmer) that drives the super fing bring led back light witch is fully independit of the lcd display its self. Next is the display that you've hacked and then its just alinement to your display surface.
But I'm guessing you guys only want speed tach and maybe a few other things do that makes it a lot easier. There are 4 ways to do this.
1. Is you have obd2 then you can use an aruino to pull from your ecm all the data you want and use a led display. It would look like an alarm clock from the 80's but would be made for under 100USD and you can make it display what ever info you want from the ecm
2. If you don't have obd2 then you could pull from your speed send unit and tack from the ecm have an aruino do the counting and display it. It would take a little more to do this but really you could have it displaying all of your gauges with one arduino unit.(if you have a tranny with a cable speedo then you would have to use a converter)
3 use a gps hooked to an arduino and use either the tinyGPS lib or the like to pull speed, distance, time, alt. All that fun stuff.
4. Take an after markit speedo and a mirror... you would need a fairly bright speedo and a little cutting to your dash and firewall but could be done.
There is alway quadsevens productions by in austin, tx. The jew that runs the place say if he can't fab what your wanting he wants what your smoking. But he only does R&D/one off stuff so it would be costly.
