Re: rear hatch

I have a friend working on mine...but I'll make a long story short...I have a ( I've been told by others on tgo ) c & c notch back...the plan was to mold that and redo it...( then big fight with friend ) then I seen the thread where the guy took a made a skeleton out of roundbar to make a notchback ...and now my friend wants to mold a factory rear hatch....

Re: rear hatch

i was thinking you could probably mold it from the stock hatch but my question is do i do it from the inside or outside and where would the notch be placed on the mold

Re: rear hatch

The idea ( not necessary the plan ) was to mold the outside...cover the window with aluminum foil or something that the fiberglass won't stick to... ( people build custom fiberglass boxes for the back of there car and use aluminum foil to cover the floor )...you can use fleece...but anyway the idea..after the mold is made to pop out a copy of the factory glass...and to cut a window in with out a notch...but I think once you get to that point cutting in a notch should be easy...

Re: rear hatch

yeah i have seen the process of molding but if you mold from the outside wont the hatch be to big? or even from the inside be to small? that is my worry and by doing it this way we are looking at like a 5 step mold mold the hatch cut out where the window would be besides the sides that you want for the notch and re mold to get a one piece look to it then cut out the hole for your window and install either lexan or glass for the window and that is not including if you want any ridges or anything on your hatch mold

making a mold of the outside will give you the correct size of the outside. the mold it just a negative of the piece. you would have to make a replica piece from the mold out of fiberglass then you can modify that.

Re: rear hatch

If your gonna make something in numbers then a mold is ideal, so the part/s is/are consistent.

For a "one of" part, the hours required to finsih the mold could be used to make the actual part. The main reason why i didnt bother making a mold myself.
