305 head availability

i'm sure others will chime in on this, but i would like to get some of the information that is much needed for 305 owners out there and available.

for all intensive purposes let's limit this too any head including factory options that can in general fit and function well on a 305 engine(well meaning as good as or better than any other factory sbc head found in this era f-body car). Keep in mind the 3.736 bore, Other than that any and all information is game.

heres a few casting #s from factory that work well:

14101128 is a corvette head found on 86-87 350ci engines they are Aluminum, 58cc, angle plug valve sizing is 1.94/1.5 (unknown runner volume or cc currently)

4102187 305ci Camaro head found on tbi f-bodies 1.84"/1.5" valves, 58cc combustion chambers (commonly refered to as swirl ports, because of the large ramp in the combustion chamber invented to induce swirl). (unknown runner volume, 58cc)

14014416 305ci HO, 80-85, 58cc, 1.84-1.5, 165/59cc ports found mostly in lg4 305ci cars also can be found in l69 models. Considered a better performing head than swirl ports by most.

14101081 305ci, 87-88 Camaro, center bolt (TPI) found on tpi 305s. Virtually same overall design as the older sidebolt styled 416 casting heads, 1.84/1.5 valves, (58cc combustion chamber unknown runner sizing).

14022601 305ci, 58cc, 1.84-1.5 valves, found on lg4 and l69 engines, side bolt design, 58cc combustion chamber. Considered on par or in the same ballpark as 416/081 head designs by most.

14102193 64cc combustion chambers casting heads found on ...87-up 350 tbi cars 350ci engines 1.94"/1.5" valves, 64cc combustion chambers, seem to be on par with 087s just more setup for a 350ci engine.

12558059 vortec 305 heads found on late model 305 truck applications, outflows 081/601/416 casting out of the box and works quite well with minimal porting. (unknown cc and runner size)

10088113 corvette 350ci Aluminum, 58cc, angle plug, raised "D" port exhaust, 1.94"/1.5" valves (also found on zz4 crate motors) (unknown runner size).

10239906 96-up 350ci truck applications flows better than all factory heads of same era out of box, 170cc runners, 1.94/1.5 valves, iron head.

2558062 98 and newer l31 Vortec, truck engines, 64cc chambers, 1.94/1.5, 170cc intake port, same overall design as the 906's

there are many more that i can vaguely remember, but please feel free to add your own inputs here (flows #s, combustion chamber cc, valve sizing, side bolt vs center bolt, so on)

now heres a couple after market combinations that work well, or can wok well on a 305 with *minimal modifications if any*

edelbrock e-tec 170, 64cc combustion chambers, 170cc runner volume, 1.94/1.5 valves.
Flow #s include:
.100 lift 64/54
.200 lift 130/104
.300 lift 186/140
.400 lift 220/169
.500 lift 232/183
.600 lift 238/190

World Products #955-042750-1(known commonly as world s/r torquer or something to that affect)
170cc Intake Ports
58cc Combustion Chambers
1.940'' Int/1.500'' Exh Valves

trick flow super 23* street 175cc heads
56cc combustion chamber, 1.94/1.5

flow #s include:
.100 lift 61/53
.200 lift 127/105
.300 lift 180/142
.400 lift 216/160
.500 lift 242/172
.600 lift 242/180

i'll keep updating this as i have more time, feel free to add as much information pertaining this subject as possible, as i for one, find it hard to find and receive information on good heads for 305s. i'm aware there are tons more so i'll be updating this as i have time, when finished up to par, i plan to see if i can fill in the blanks for all needed info by future users.

i would like to eventually turn this in to a good tech article underlining all the pro/cons of each head and where to get them. In other words the more information the better.

Re: 305 head availability

How about the vortec 305 heads, 059...and the aluminum corvette heads, 113 I think.

Re: 305 head availability

most definetly as i briefly mentioned those so far.... have tons more, i beleive rhs has 1.94/1.5 valved heads that could work on this combo as well... there are also 906 vortecs, i'm looking for more thorough data than a 3 casting part # though, something like flow #s, valve sizing, runner sizing so on.... i'll update this more today and tomorow and try and fill in some blanks.

Re: 305 head availability

I have an 86 TPI 305 IROC with ported and polished heads... What casting heads do i have? Are they the 416 or 081??? I searched everywhere and can't find any info on what type of heads the 86 TPI had.

Does anybody know?

Thanks in advance..

Re: 305 head availability

as long as your heads are side bolt valve covers they are the older 416 casting head most likely...... although i beleive 601s were of the same era and same old style bolt pattern..... only one way to see which it is that you have, pop a valve cover and read it

Re: 305 head availability

Hmmm I have center bolt valve covers... (In my sig you can see pics of my car on my site). They were rebuilt by the guy ho owned the car before me.. Just never knew what he really did to them!

Re: 305 head availability

My 1986 IROC-Z 5.0L has the "416" heads. They have the CENTER bolts in the valve covers. The heads also have the OLDER bolt pattern for the intake. Along with the hole for a fuel pump rod, so, you can bolt a pump on the block.

In 1987 they changed the center intake bolts to 73 degrees.
