how rare is my car? lol. J/K guys. I now you don't like that question. but it is sort of my question. I have a 1982 Trans Am with a WS6 package with the LU5 Motor (305 with the Cross Fire Injection). now from what I have gathered about the history of this car is that in 1982 they were making the Trans Am WS6's and they had rear disc brakes on them. but half way through the year they ran out of rear disc brakes. so what they did was put drum brakes on and called it the WS7. I have the ones with the disc brakes. but here's the deal. the LU5 didn't come out till half way through the 1982 production year. so most 1982 Trans Am's either had the LU5 engine with the WS7 package (drum brakes) or the LG4 (4BBL engine) and the WS6. now there is a rumor that there was a 10 day overlap in this. so for 10 days the cars got the WS6 and the LU5. My car has this.
basically what I'm wondering: is the info that I've gathered true? anybody have any comments? how rare is my car?
j/k again.
any help is greatly appreciated!
right now my car is in crappy condition. I'm thinking about a rebuild/restoration. any help with this is great too.

I can't really comment on the rarity of your car, but I can vouch for the 10-day part of your comment. I have a road test from Road and Track magazine that mentions the 10-day "window" for the CFI engine and the WS6 package. Their test car had both options as well.
I don't know how many T/As were built a day back then.... the first years of the 3rdGen cars saw a general upturn in sales. But it would be unique, nevertheless.

cool that's what I wanted to know. makes me feel a little better about my car.
what about the codes. can anybody help with that?
thanks.

With the 10 day comment validated, I guess you could say your combo is VERY rare. Its also desirable as you have the best possible engine and suspension/chassis combo for that year. If you had the WS7, even if the WS7/LU5 was a 10 day window, I'd say "so what? Its inferior." But your car is rare AND has the desirable parts...
So you have a 1st year car with all the high-po goodies available that year. Sounds good to me. Now go fix it

If it is true about that 10 day thing, you got what I tend to call a factory freak. Wierd combinations are cool. I'd say it is rare and you should do a full resto. Remeber though, if you ditch CFI and slap on a carb, you ruin the car, no matter how much faster it is. CFI cars are getting rare because so many people have done that, your car was rare to begin with....

AMEN to that, brother.... So you have a 1st year car with all the high-po goodies available that year. Sounds good to me. Now go fix it

wait wait wait. now that contradicts everything that I've been hearing.

I'm not saying you are wrong, just I've been getting other info and wanted to share it with you so you could look it over. if you are right, then you are right, but I gotta make sure ya know.
where did you get your information from? I'm just getting into researching this car and need all the links or books that I can get my hands on.
here's another site... http://members.***.net/iroczdave1/IROCZDAVE'S%20Firebird%20Info%20Page.htm

well I wanna make sure about a couple things so I know about the car. here's the story. I'm the second owner of the car, and I bought it from a used car dealership. in 1996 it had 58,000 miles on it and now it has 122,000 miles on it. If I go to DMV can I get all the info on the car from the VIN #? like where it was first sold and all that... accidents ect... can I do that?
how could I tell if it LU5 with the NB2 California Emissions? The car was made in Van Nuy's.

82RECAROTA, the article I have doesn't make any reference to which LU5 engine combo was late. It just says "the LU5 came on board late". There's no mention of emissions' packages in there.
But with your reference material, I'm inclined to side with you. Thanks for the insight.

sin,
Even if your car isn't as rare as we all thought, fix it up anyways!! Like someone else said, everyone has wrecked a lot of CFI cars by slapping a carb on. This car is unique regardless of how "rare" it is. I say its rare solely because, when was the last time anyone here saw a CFI '82 T/A driving around????
Like I said...its got all the right goodies. So go fix it

I say fix it too. Everyone gets rid of Cross-fire. Even I did.
yeah, I plan on doing a restore, and I'm gonna keep the crossfire for sure! I'm sending off for the complete history from Pontiac Historical in a couple of days. so in 10-15 days I should know all about my car.
thanks to 82Recaro for leading me to the Pontiac Historical site. I would never have found that.
I'll tell ya what I find when I get the paper work on the car... I'm excited!

you really don't want to see it right now. I've let the car go the past couple of years. I guess I could take a before and after picture. let me think about it. I might have to clean it up and take a pic. lol.
here's a question. think I should get the stock rims? right now I have IROC 15's on it. I put the IROC's on it because when I bought the car it had wire wheels on it. yuck. so the IROC's were cheap and available...

Pics can't be that bad, after all, there is a Challenger in my garage slowly to returning from the brink of the scrapheap. Ratty projects don't scare me
. IMO, early T/As look great with the factory Turbine wheels minus the huge ugly centercaps.

Awww c'mon, the hubcaps are sweet looking
I agree, the turbines are cool...but can anyone here tell me a black T/A with black hubs doesn't have a certain coolness to it???
Need I say WHY???
