Was the 'Z' steering box ever an option?

Was the 'Z' steering box ever an option?
Well, I was tearing down my 91 Firebird V6 project car today and found a 'Z' stamped on the gear box. I thought that was the quick ratio box? Why would it be on a base model car? Perhaps it was an option?
