L98 Motors
Did an '89 IROC L98 have the same motor as a Vette? If so, how come Vettes were faster? There was this guy on autotrader that I emailed, cause he was selling one saying it had a Vette motor.
maybe he's just one of those dumb guys trying to up the value of the car buy putting the term "vette motor"
same as the new 4th gen LS1 camaros.........
but honestly do some research on a vette web site i am sure you could compare specs....

They are slightly different, obviously with the heads. They aren't really much faster than the good geared Third Gen's.
The heads are diferent and so are the cams. The Vette also got a less restrictive exhaust. With those changes, the car has a Camaro engine, not a Vette engine. The L98 for the Vette was detuned for the Camaro. Both cars share the same foundation, but they are diferent engines. As was mentioned, the LS1 for the Camaro is a detuned version of the same motor in the Vette. Spend a little money, get the Vette components installed on the L98, call it a Vette motor and you'll also have a Vette beater for a lot less money than the cost of a Vette.
The Curb weight of an 87 Vette was 3216# and the curb weight of the 87 IROC was 3273#. I added all the individual option weights to the base curb weight on my IROC and I came up with a total of 3490#. The 3216 on the Vette was the 87 Coupe as a base curb weight without options. I would say that both cars were relatively closely matched in the weight arena.

scottmoyer,
Thats something how you have information on individual option weights.
I have a lot of old Motor Trends and a few other magazines but nothing like that.
Do you know or does your information give you the horspower and torque differences between the two cars.
I have been through the Corvette factory and never saw so many vettes in one time in my whole life. Everyone who Likes Camaro's should go too.

Chet, contact Chevrolet's customer assistance number and tell them that you want a restoration package for the 86 Camaro. The package lists the individual option weights determined at the factory.
The horsepower of the 87 IROC was listed as 225hp with the 350/auto and the Vette was rated at 240hp.
As for touring the Corvette plant, there will be a 1000 Camaro car show at the Bowling Green plant this September 20-22. If you can get to BG with your car, go. Only 300 people have pre registered for this historical show. Never in the history of the Camaro has 1000 cars been present at one show.

scottmoyer,
I would have never imaged that they would have a restoration package for the 86 Camaro. My head is spinning more now with Camaros in the last month than in the previous 16 years except for maybe when I first got the car.
Bowling green is about 110 miles from my house or about 2 hours drive. I would be scared to death to drive the car down to bowling green and I sure don't have an enclosed trailer to put it in. It would start rusting or melting if it ever saw the rain. I know thats
but I have to protect my car.
Here lately unless its changed there has been no tours going through the factory. Rumor has it that they have had Cadillac two seaters doing test production runs through faculty and they don't want any spies or cameras in the place.
Thanks for the link to Corvette museum.

The most significant differences between the Vette L98 and Camaro L98:
1. Heads. The heads are of similar design, the runners are the same and combustion chambers the same. Main differences are the chamber cc (Vette 58cc - Camaro 64cc) that's because of the heat loss with aluminum (Vette L98's are not a direct bolt on for 305's). Vette's spark plugs are angled. The intake pattern is the old pre 86 design on the Vette's. That's about it.
2. Less restrictive exhaust. The manifolds on the Vettes are better, the downpipes and entire exhaust system. It still would be nicer to see a true dual system on the Vettes.
3. Camshafts are the same. I've pulled out Vette L98 cams and the part numbers come up the same as the Camaro ones I get my hands on.
4. Though it doesnt change the performance, it is something to note that the TPI base is the old pattern on the Vettes to match the heads.
Really there isnt enough difference to really make a huge difference in performance. What we really need is side by side dyno comparisons of the motors (not chassis). The real advantage the Vette had was the ZF 6 speed that really made the Vette quick (forget the Doug Nash 4+3).
