"Flag" mirrors... pretty rare. Used in 87 only, IIRC it was only the earlier 87 models that have them and the later ones are the style like on every other F-body. The 87 brochure has a GTA with them on it. I never liked them personally, dont think anyone else did either and thats why they went back to the others.
You can check this place out, will have more answers I'm sure:

madmax, thanks for the plug for The GTA Source Page....
Ah, yes, the "Euro" side mirrors.... Originally slated to be a GTA-only application, the mirrors made an early exit in the 1987 model year due to the fact that they were unusually susceptible to damage from minor impacts. "Rumor" has it that less than 200 cars were built with the side mirrors installed.
The mirrors were mandated for use on all 3rdGen Firebirds and Camaros built for export to Europe through 1992, though.

Here's what you're talking about.
this is a pic of a GTA in Sweden--I heard these mirrors were standard til sometime around 90--for the European market.
notice the small marker light below the fender emblem.

Here's a rearview of the same car--notice the tail lights? These were the standard lights for the European market. The stock GTA lights didn't meet their standards--I think because there weren't amber lights in them.
