Cowl plate D W B N S / 6 digit code (1982 - 1985)

OK here's one I have never been able to understand. 1982-1985 F-Bodies had a cowl plate with plenty of codes, nearby the hood latch area on the car body. (The 1986-1992's I've seen never have these codes, so this question doesn't apply to them). The 1982-1985 cowl plates include various codes that are easy to decode pertaining to colors, options, when they were made, etc. But on the bottom left they have some mysterious codes I've never understood. If the car was made in Norwood Ohio, it has a 6-digit number on the bottom left corner which is seemingly random and is not sequential from one car to the next. If it was made in Van Nuys CA, it does not have this 6-digit number, but instead, it has up to 5 letters, and they are always D, W, B, N, and S, and in that order. Many cars are missing one or more letters, so it's usually "D B N S" or "D W N " or something like that. If anyone knows what these letters and numbers mean, I'd be really glad to know. PS I'm not referring to the Fisher body number on the bottom right. All the codes in question are on the bottom left.

Thanks
GT

That doesn't sound right at all. I think we're talking about 2 separate things. The letters are on the bottom left of the cowl tag, they are always D W B N S (with some letters missing sometimes) and no other letters, just those 5, only. they only show on Van Nuys cars. Norwood cars have the 6-digit code instead of the letters. I have documented Recaros missing the "S", and since we know all Recaros had mandatory t-tops, it seems to be a contradiction. I've never seen 18S on any T/A cowl plate. Any ideas, let me know.

Thanks

a couple of questions for you:

- Where on any 82 Recaro do you see primary vinyl interior parts? Only thing I see is cloth and gobs of cheap 80s plastics.

- Why is it that some cars have NONE of the 5 letters, while others may have one, or 2, or all 5? Logic dictates that no cars are sold with incomplete interiors (heh) so how is it possible to have NO codes?

- What role do the rest of those codes play, since they never show up on a Trans Am? ( C,E,G,H,J,8,R,V,Y,Z,2,3,4)

- Explain more about Job Sequence and Schedule sequence at Norwood, if you can.

Thanks
