Plastic models (1:18 1:24, etc)

Anyone know of any new, unopened models? Specifically, looking for late 3G or possibly 82 Pace Car.

Help would be appreciated.

(If this is in the wrong forum, I don't know if there is a right one)

Ya, Ebay is the place to go. I bought all of my promo models there in addition to several 3rd gen kits. The promo models are still cheap, but the kits are getting pricey.

I picked up an 82-83 Z28 model, with CFI at the hobby shop 3 weeks ago. They had a Knight Rider model too. Both were AMT kits.

Ditto that! Go with the Sunstar diecast. They make an nice 82 Z28. Those promo models are OK, but they look fake.

They may look fake but the 1st & 2nd gens are worth anywhere from $0 to $500 & trying to find a 82 indy pace car Promo Model (which is plastic) is impostable since they only made very few I have only seen 3.

Promotional models value is that they are GM issued, down the road the third and fourth gen promo models may be worth something also. A 69 pace car promo went on ebay for 500-600 recently

I saw that "82 pace car Promo" too. I don't think it was a GM issued promo model. I think someone took a promo model and painted it to look like a pace car, then added decals. The give away for me was no year on the rear license plate, all promo models have the year on the back plate.

To the best of my knowledge GM never issued an 82 pace car promo model, somebody correct me if I am wrong.

GM did issue an 82 promo model but it was dark metallic blue

I do have a 70s promo model I think it is a 1970 promo that does not have a date on the rear plate. But it does have & I did see some of Scott settlemires Collection 2 yrs ago at our show & the 70 didnt have a year on the rear. Also He had 2 82 Pace car Promos in Vegas last month so I dont know. All I know is it came with a box that was stamped "82 Indy Promo".

Thanks for the info, maybe GM did issue them, I like a little more verification before I'd spend $200 dollars for one though.

As far as dates go all of mine 82-92 have the year on the back license plate, so i would think an 82 pace car would also. The one that was on ebay specifically said that it didn't have the year on it. I was interested in it until the price got out of hand

Yea I have to email Scott to see if he knows anything about them. My husband was bidding on that one but didnt make the last bid in time. or it would have been nearly $250.

All of ours but the 1970 has a year on the back plate even the 73s we have.

So as I said I will have to email scott to see what he says.

I base what I buy on accuracy and detail, not future value. But, to each his own.

Does anybody know of a 1:18 scale 3rd gen Firebird?

Kraazycowgirl:

Let me know what you find out from Scott.

One of the reasons I'm suspicious about 82 promo pace cars is that they would be easy to fake. For about $30 investment I could make an 82 pace car out of a promo model, sell it on Ebay for $200, thats a tidy profit.

I don't believe any promo models were made for any specific model until 93 with the 93 Pace Car. There are decals available and people are doing very nice jobs creating the promos. I bought an 82 promo Pace car in Carlisle 2 years ago. It cost $95 and was created by the artist by taking an 82 promo, taking it apart, and detailing it. He had the graphics made and then sold them. Because of the popularity of the pace cars, others have started doing the same. Until 93, the promos were all single color interior and exterior and looked a little bland. They are starting to detail them better with the 4th gens.

I agree, Scott, the fourth gen promos are nice models compaired to earlier promos.

the 82 pace car promos that I have seen on Ebay are being advertised as being GM issued, which is why the price gets so high, frankly the buyer is getting ripped off IMO.

Good morning, Tammy!

I am not aware of a 1982 Indy 500 Promo. model...but hey, I could be
wrong........ If I am, then I am now missing only 5 samples of promo
models offered in 1/25 scale...instead of only 4!!!!

I know that there were 1/25 scale model kits available.......but I guess I
need to go home and check my models book.......

Meanwhile, hope all is well with you and yours......
Then what he most of had was the mock ups that they do.....

Thanks again Kraazycowgirl.

I'll bet that if the Ebay sellers stated that they were not GM issued promo models in their auctions they wouldn't get $200+ dollars for them.

I think they were a rerelease by AMT/Ertl. I picked up 2 myself(1/18th scale)

Update - I was at the Indy Speedway today at a memorabilia show. I spoke with a few people that collect and sell original promo cars and they stated the 67 and 69 Camaro promo cars were also offered in the Indy pace car trim. There was no official 82 Pace Car promo. If you are willing to spend the money on an original promo, make sure it comes in the original box with the printing on the box that states the car as an Indy car and not somebody's own stamping. The guy that gave me this info just finished selling a 1970 Mustang Mach1 promo for $1000. It's very rare.

They also said that the original 67 and 69 promo cars will not be in good shape because the adhesive used 30+ years ago for the decals didn't hold up. The blue stripe of the 67 should be peeling as well as the door decals. Some of the ones on Ebay must be "restored"

I think that if the Ebay bidders knew that the 82's weren't official, the price wouldn't get anywhere near $200, like it has been.

I have tons of the promos, the red 82 1:18 Z-28, Matchbox cars, Hot wheels cars, Johnny Lightning cars, and my personal favorite, my 1988 1:8 scale IROC! It looks just like my car, with red decals, red interior, and a black exterior, with the TPI! This model is 22" long!!!! Try finding another one of those
