SLP Iroc-Z:

I've searched the 87 vert topic. OK, it appears the number is closer to 260. "8"..."260"...WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE!!!

Either way, I'm sure Willie and a few of the other guys will chime in here soon. And either way, I think keeping it original would be a good choice!

There is no official production figure. Let me explain.

Chevrolet did not record production figures for option combinations. In other words, I can tell you there were "x" 1984 Camaros with A/C and "y" with t-tops, but no one knows how many came with both (an option combination). That being said, the convertible (RPO Z08) was an option on the 1987 Z28 as was the IROC-Z (RPO B4Z) package. The official production for 1987 Z28 convertibles is 744. But no one knows how many of the 744 were Z28's without the IROC-Z option. Note: The 744 seems awfully low compared to the total 1987 Camaro production of 137,760!! That's less than one percent!

The best we can do to figure this out is to use known percentages. There were 53,607 Z28's. Of these, 38,889 had the IROC-Z option, or 72.5 percent. Based on this ratio alone:

1987 Z28 Convertibles: 204.6 >> 205
1987 IROC-Z Convertibles: 539.4 >> 539

BUT (and this is a big one), most Z28 convertibles did have the IROC-Z option, simply because it was top of the line most buyers who were in the market for this car would spend the $$$. The base price of the Z28 coupe was $13,233 whereas the convertible was $17,632. So to add a paltry $699 for the base IROC-Z option was pocket change.

One can only take an educated guess as to how many of these were made. I've found twelve vs. 100+, or about ten percent. Ten percent of 744 is 74.4 >> 75. This is why my guess is less an 100. Of these, how many are still with us today? Well, I started a registry of these cars in 1992 (I found the first one in 1994). In this timeframe, I have located over one hundred IROC-Z's and only twelve Z28's (one is mine). Of these twelve, ten have the LG4 / auto and only two have the TPI / 5-speed (one is mine). There were ZERO LG4 / 5-speed and TPI / auto drivetrains in 1987 Z28 convertibles.

1987 was also the year of the "return of the convertible", and it was GM's 75th anniversary. Hence, the 1987 convertible was given the "20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition" title. The coupe did not get this, which makes the convertible that much more desirable. It's the ONLY third generation Camaro to receive a map pocket. Today, the convertible remains the UNKNOWN ANNIVERSARY CAMARO.

Is it rare? You bet. By production numbers, it is the rarest regular production third generation Camaro.

Is it collectible? Absolutely. Try to fine one! Today, it's the ONLY third Generation Camaro who's "base" Z28 is worth more than the same car with the IROC-Z option. Speculation: I sincerely believe it will stay this way in the years go come simply because of the huge disparity in production numbers between the two. Years ago when I concurrently owned a 1987 Z28 convertible AND a 1987 IROC-Z convertible, I was forced to sell one. I chose to keep the Z28, which is the car I still have today. Sorry, it is not for sale.
