how do i tell what engine i have

i was told at one point that i had a LT1 engine, that came to be false and i don't have that. Then another person told me that it was. I am not sure what i have. Now what i think that i might have the the Elimator engine but i don't even know if i do. Is there some way of telling what i have?

Check your VIN with the VIN decoder on the main site.

Or you should have LB9 or L98 in your SPID sticker.

The LT1 wasnt in the F-Bodie's until 1993 in the new bodystyle.

Im not sure what exactly the Eliminator engine is.

Your vin and spid label will give you your engine code for your original factory installed engine, but do yourself a favor and verify by looking here. Stamped right on the block will be your displacement in liters.

IF you have the TPI runners then you have a TPI car,

8th didget of the VIN)
8 = L98 (350 TPI)
F=LB9 (305 TPI)
P=LT1 ( Vette Only )
E= LO3 (305 TBI)
T= 3.1 V6

ahaha an eliminator engine? Is like the terminator?
I can only think of Dale Earnheart(sp?) when i hear eliminator.

where in Mass are you? If need be, ill go check it out and see if anyone swapped anything or you just have a plain old TPI car. Post up your Vin number. That would be the easiest way to identify the stock engine in your car.

i thought that the stamp was in front near the alternator (or ac pump on some), and while i can plainly see in your pic that its not, ive seen other pics with it in other locales,, clear this up for me as im trying to figure out if i have a 305 or 350 tbi since the vin says 305 but our freind who drove the car said it was obviosly a 350 by the peddle (whomped on it,, spun in three gears,, did ninety in third) thanks for the help

Haha reminds me of my friend who had a IROC with the L03 and his mechanic told him that it was a 350 TBI because "it looked like a 350"

welp it could've had something to do with the fact that i have 3.73's in the rear, it also coul;d have somthing to do with the ported tb, new cam (i have no idea what it is, previous owner) and jet chip,, or the shift kit,, yea one of those would do that,,, plus a fairly stock rear suspension,,, in any case, i pulled the ac pump and bracket tonight and now i need to know what im lookin at
sadly it was fairly well rusted off but what remained of the code looked like it said 7DBE, the d looked as tough it had a line underneath it. anyone know what this means? i know e is the lo3 vin code but,,,not certain if that is related to the block number..

and yea the dude who said it was a 350 owned a turbo transam and those were 305's and based upon mine being faster then that he was sayin mine was a 350... dang im tired..

If you are talking about the 80-81 Turbo Trans Am they came with a Pontiac 301.

If you are talking about the 1989 Turbo Trans Am the had Buick 231 in them.

bingo... the 2nd gen TTA's aint no big shake. They are probably the worst TA's ever made next to any CFI TA's.... but then again... every 2nd gen after 74 wasnt much of a contender in performance. Even the 6.6 motors werent really that fast. Dam smog laws.... The 301 is a 4.9L motor... and they are DOGS!!!

dude,, the codes.. i just want to sleep but i wont till i know if its a 350 or not,, and considering some of the oddball things that have been done to this car, how it performs, and having seen it done at the track where i worked for two years it wouldnt amaze me if my car had been swapped into. either way i win though, 92 heritage edition rs in black, o if its lo3, likely its stock and im #'s matching, if its a 350 then yipeee i can get parts that work for it in summit.. just please tell me the codes

The displacement is marked in liters on the back where I've pointed it out in the picture. The actual casting number is stamped on the front of the block on a small pad near the cylinder head on the passenger side of the engine. This will tell you more specific information.

Go to this link to decifer your engine code.
