Front ash tray question

I finally found a low mileage WC T5 tranny for my car, and it came with the console plate with the ****boot, and the ashtray (plus a cool carbon fiber shifter!!)

The tranny is out of an 88 Iroc, but the ashtray is confusing me. It's plastic! Is it aftermarket, or from another year? I've never seen one like this.

I'm pretty sure the ashtray in both my 91's were plastic.

My 89 IROC-Z ash tray is plastic, though my 86 IROC-Z ash tray is metal.

Were there any exceptions? My 88 has a metal one and the guy that I bought it from (original owner) swears it is original!

Considering 88 was the chageover year, its possiblle the first ones built got metal ones to use them up. Just a guess.
