Standard from 1986-91. The hatch release can easily be added. It is just a matter of unbolting one 10mm bolt holding the non-solenoid release and swapping the solenoid release. Then running the wiring, relay and switch. I added one to my 90 'vert. Be sure to run a ground wire from that bolt to the ground location below the hatch pull-down unit. Otherwise the solenoid won't fire because it is isolated from ground by the nylon guides.
Look over the tech article I wrote a few years back on repairing it. I stock most of the parts you'd need to repair it. Check that you have +12v at th red with white stripe wire that connects to the blue wire on the pull-down unit. It should be hot at all times. Other things to look at are the clear plastic motor housing. It is common for them to crack and break where the 3 screws mount it to the frame of the pull-down unit. Replace the hatch struts if they are weak. Also if the unit continues to run without shutting off, that indicates that the teeth on the gear nut are stripped. Grab hold of the latch and see if you get movement forward and back or side to side. That will indicate that the nylon guides need to be replaced. They are important in maintaining the correct alignment of the gearnut to the wormdrive ov the motor.
Good luck,
