1991 Z-28
1991 Z-28
I have a friend that owns this car and it has a 350tpi motor. The car is maroon with t-tops I believe.I know most of the Z's came with 305tpi motors.Does anybody know how many had the 350tpi?And is there a color break down on these cars?I appreciate any help. Thanks Tim
Holy smoke! You just opened a can of worms and you didn't even know it!
The general consensus is that no 5.7 T-top cars were produced in 91 & 92. I've read that maybe some of the very early 91's might have the combination but I don't think anyone has ever posted a RPO sheet to verify the claim. You'll need to find CC1 and L98 (I think) on the RPO sheet. Be sure to post a copy of it here if it turns out to be a real 5.7 T-top 91.

I dug up some of the old post wars about this topic...no way I read it all...too much work for this topic.
until someone backs up their claim with a RPO sheet, VIN, proof etc etc, then technically there weren't any 350 91-92 T-top Z's.
Problem is GM was notorious for installing engine / tranny / trim combo's that DID NOT exist on the factory order sheets. Most times at the end of a model year run, or when there were shortages of certain parts etc..And being the third-gen ended it's run in '92, you can bet there are some WEIRD '92 model third gens running around ( if they survived ) that got parts they wouldn't have normally, cause it was the end of the third-gen run, and the 4th gen was already up and coming.
I'll add my 2 cents , with NO RPO sheet to back it up...LOL
One of my old friends that I turned wrenches with bought a '92 Z off the dealer's lot the summer of '92. Car was that pretty metallic looking blue ( Quasar blue maybe? ) black leather interior ( sucked in the summer time let me tell ya ), T-tops, auto tranny, 4 wheel discs, and ...drum roll please... the 350 TPI / 700 combo.
He had that car for probably 4 or 5 years, and it went through more than a few modifications...and I was present when we yanked the original motor after a piston parted ways after liberal use of the big blue bottle. I'm the one who dropped the block off at the machine shop to have it tanked etc...
The bore was verified and it was a 350.
Just fuel to the fire...
At least it didn't start with "My Uncle specially ordered a ....."

He's right, GM was notorious for building cars that weren't supposed to exist. It was very true in the muscle car era, and probably is true for the 3rdgen too.
In the '60s, GM had a rule that no small-ish cars except the Corvette could have more than 400ci, like the Nova, Camaro, Chevelle, etc... but GM built lots of "backdoor specials" like the COPO cars with 427s. GM also said no multi-carb engines for anything but the Corvette... then the Z/28 got the dual quad intake as a under-the-table option, or the TriPower GTOs.
I know that isn't quite the same, but it just goes to show how well GM sticks to what it says can and cannot be built.
