Did they produce a 89 clone of the real IROC'S that was supposedly so you could have the look's but not have to pay the higher insurance premium, If so where would you find any documentation of this? Or was my buddy full of

Its weird but I have seen some RS's with iroc stripes, but thats it. No door decals or anything else. Weird, but I don't know if it was just an add on appearance package, or if it was even a factory option.

NO. The only thing that resembled the Z28 or IROC-Z and wasn't one was the 1988 Sport Coupe. It got the 85-87 Z28 Ground effects, nose, and rims and the 82-84 Z28 taillights. The interior was identical except for the old berlinetta/sport coupe steering wheel. The hood was the standard flat hood and the headlight pockets were body colored. They looked similar to a Z28, not an IROC-Z. People have painted the lower gfx body colored and added the decals to resemble an IROC-Z, but it was never a factory thing.
Here's my old 88 Sport Coupe.
Notice the body stripe is the same as my 87 IROC-Z stripe.
