Vin question

What is the check digit for?
The number nine in the vin number is a check digit but what does it mean?

Well, I cant find it. Thought it was where you put the VIN in from the main page. The check digit is the remainder of an equation of adding up the numbers in the VIN (and assigning numbers to the letters based on some sort of GM assigned numbers) and dividing it all by 11, IIRC. Only reason you'd care is if you wanted to verify that a VIN was vaild, but then again anyone who's good enough to forge one certainly knows how to calc the check digit.
