87 Z28 ?'s

Great news... A friend of mine just informed me about an 87 z28 that is supposed to have a good T-5 in it. I am going to look at it on Saturday. I initially just wanted the transmission, but when I found out it was a Z28, (not sure, he is pretty sure it is), I got kinda excited. Could I expect a 5.7 TPI????? Should I expect the larger diameter sway bars???? What about posi rear end???? I am busting right now, because I can get the whole car for $100!!!!!!!

I don't know a lot about it, but I am pretty sure it doesn't run, and I was told the body was pretty rough. I am sure it is if the guy only wants 100 for it.

Please let me know if this is cause for real excitement. Thanks

is it a IROC Z28? I dont think it has a 350 TPI in it, cuz you mention a T 5 (theres no 350s with 5 speed, Unless he did a swap...) If the 8th digit in the VIN says "8" then its a 350.. Its good chance its a 305 LB9 with 3.08 gears, maybe... Goodluck and tell us all about it. If its just a Z28 then it has to be a LB9, and there was no 350s im 87 with the Z28, only the IROC Z

Not sure whether it is IROC or not. I hope it is, cuz then it should have the big sway bars, right?? I forgot about GM being retarded and not giving us a 5 speed manual 350 tpi. That would have been awesome. Is it likely however, that it will be a TPI? I don't know all of the RPO's by heart yet. LB9 ??????

If its just a plain Z28 then it can either have a Lb9 305 tuned Port Injection or a Carb LG4.... Thats stock atleast.. Who knows what this car has, get the VIN and decode it here at TGO or ask the owner as well and the RPOs get them... But if the car was totally swapped (engine/tranny), then the vin and RPO is really not gonna make a big diffrence.. that T5 means theres a good chance with no 350

The car is only 100 dollars, so I am going to buy it unless the clutch won't release, and the trans won't shift into all 5 gears. ****, I might buy it even if it doesn't shift. It is only 100 dollars.

Read the Tech Data people, it's there for a reason.

OOPS........Thanks. How would I know if my Dad's 86 IROC had the available 350 TPI?

Lemme try to guess, but I would like an answer anyway.

Find L98 code somewhere on RPO tag.
Q. Where is RPO Tag?
Q. Where on tag is engine RPO?

Sorry about these stupid Q's, I am only recently learning the RPO's and their meaning.

What about the sway bars. Is the large diameter sway bar only going to be on the car if it is IROC, or does the Z28 give up the large bar by itself?

Thanks

The IROC-Z got all the best stuff. From the Tech Data.....

"The new IROC-Z option was available on the Z28 and came with new 16x8 aluminum rims, P245/50VR-16 Z Rated Goodyear Gatorback tires, fog lights, CAMARO on front license plate panel, .5 inch lowered ride height, body colored valances, Delco-Bilstein rear gas shocks, special front struts, increased spring rates, special jounce bumpers, 5 degrees of caster (up from 3.5 on Z28) in front wheel alignment, `WonderBar' front frame rail stiffener, special valving in steering for increased steering effort, larger rear stabilizer bar with stiffer bushings, IROC-Z exterior decals and interior dash badge, and a thinner two-color lower body stripe."

No, the L03 wasn't available until 1988.

LO3 replaced the LG4 in 1988 as the base engine.

The Z28 and IROC-Z both used identical sway bars. The IROC-Z added the Wonderbar.

Check your e-mail Willie....

I've always read IROC-Z's had a 1mm bigger sway bars and with better bushings.

THe RPO codes should be in the center box if its a L98 car you should also see B2L.

B2L: PERFORMANCE PACKAGE & ENGINE PACKAGE V8 5.7LPFI
L98 : 5.7 LITER V8 TPI ENGINE

As someone else said check the vin tag its in the winsheld drivers side next to the dash. check for the 8th digit

S= V6 TBI LB8 2.8 L
F= 305 V8 TPI LB9 5.0 L
H= 305 V8 BC LG4 5.0 L
8= 350 V8 TPI BL2 5.7 L (or LB9)

It's already been determined that it isn't a 350 because of the 5 speed. This information is useless at this point.

Thanks for all the replies, guys and gals. I really know nothing about the car except that it has a manual transmission and it is a v8 car. The guy who told me about it said he thinks it is an 87 Z28. I will know for sure on Saturday when I go to look at it. I really want the biggest factory sway bars I can get, N/S about the mm.......anybody know?????

What I would like to know now is if the Z28 tags got you the large sways, or if the biggest bar came with the IROC-Z tag.

Right now I am hoping it is an IROC-Z, because I want the big swaybars. My car is/was an RS model factory 6 cylinder, and the sways arent very big.

Can't remember right now...... When did the T-5's go WC???

if you realy want big sway bars why not just go to spohns and get new ones?

a z28 for 100 i would grab it and do a rebuild on it if the body is solid.

if it is a tpi and the body is junk you can get up toward 400 for the tpi with computer, very hot for street rods. If you polish it up real nice ive seen 800 if done right. pleanty of usable parts if the body is bad. sounds like you got a good find if the car is some what complete and not totaled.

let us know what it is when you get it.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I never checked it out because I knew eventually I would find some used ones. Honestly, I don't even know how much they run? Maybe I will look into it if this car doesn't have the big bars.

BTW, How big are the BIG bars?

not sure on the exact size, but I belive the Pontiac WS6 sway bars are even larger than the IROC, and even some of the aftermarket "High performance" ones .

If it is a plain old Z28 I hope Willie is right, but I really hope it is an IROC Z. I would like to have that Wonderbar.

How good are the factory Wonderbars??

No Such Luck!!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I went and looked at the car today, MAJOR disappointment. The 87 z28 with T-5 I had been dreaming about was crushed by an 83 Berlinetta with no engine, and somebody's cobble job TH350.
The sway's are same or smaller than mine, no GFX, no TPI anything, no smile on my face at the end of the day.

You couldn't pay me $100 to haul this POS away. It was laying on the ground, no tires or wheels, supported by the gay *** lake pipes cleverly bolted to the rocker panels. It had a custom "brushed" look to the paint.......I am guessing that paint was originally intended for somebody's barn or something.

Basically, I am crushed, please pity me.

Whats the difference between

-Iroc-z

-Z28

-Iroc-z28

I own an 87 IROC-28 with an LB9 5-speed. Its pretty quick (for a 305)
