Question on registering my TA

I could not realy find a specific forumn to put this in so please correct me if need be.

I am wondering if anyone who lives in NY ever registered their car as a "street rod" ???

I have an 88 GTA and I have been told by numerous people that it is possible to register a vehicle as a "street rod" and thus bypass any requirements for cat converters or exhaust. I am wondering, can this be done? And if yes, then how do I go about inspections? Will a mechanic look to see if my 'check engine' light is on even though the car is registered as a 'street rod' ???

Thanks for any info you guys got,
Dan

PS: Any answer will realy help because I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler that I would love to drop a 318 in, but unfortunately cannot because of OBD II laws. If I could register my Jeep as a "street rod" I could easily drop in anything I want thus bypassing the OBD II requirements.

Why dont you just put a Magnum 318 or 360 with computer and all the fuel injection in yor jeep? That way, youll have your V-8, and you wont have to worry about emissions. Also, Im curious as to why you want to get rid of the cat? Anytime Ive omitted the cat from any of my cars, it has never gone any faster...whether a Mustang or a Trans Am, never picked up anything.

So are yyou trying to register the Jeep or the GTA as a street rod? They are totally different beasts and fall into different categories.

Why not contact your DOT and see what they tell you. Don't give up all your information, but basically ask what clasifies a car as a "Street Rod"? They should know better than any one here.

I thought about dropping in a 360 with all the computer and fuel parts for it into my jeep, but I thought that OBD II states that you can only swap motors into a vehicle that could have been options or standard with that vehicle. The Wrangler in 2000 came either with a tiny 4 cylinder or the 242 ci inline 6 that I already have in there. The 360 I would drop in would be from a Ram or Durango. Does anyone know if this is true, can I drop in a motor that did not come in a jeep?

Again, this is NOT 3rd Gen F-body related. However There are several people around the country that have put in an LT1, LT4, LS1 and LS6 engines into their 3rd Gen. Essentially you have to pass the emissions standards for your vehicle and for the vehicle year. To do so I would not see why you could not put in a V8 if so desired from same year OR NEWER Durango for example.

HOWEVER, I am not in New York, and the ONLY people that would know this for sure would be those who are in your area and deal with such a thing. Your DOT would be a good place to start. They may tell you "NO" off the bat, BUT if you do some checking you may be alble to do what you want.

Keep in mind that you can not usually go backwards. For example, it is not "legal" to put in a 1970 400 sbc into an 87 Firebird that originally had emission equipment, unless you can get that engine to pass emissions for that car for the year of the body. So going backwards is not recommended, however going forwards is usually not a problem because emissions technology has surpassed what was expected in the year of a car.
