you need to get a registry place to do it. Online you can only find out what the numbers mean, ie, that it is indeed, an '89, etc....
If you want to see who owns it, and where it is, a registry can search for who's registered it, but may not divulge certain info...

Go to your local DMV and get the forms to do a title search. It usually costs around $10. Depending on the privacy laws in your state or the state the car is registered in you may not be able to get the current owner's name or address.

I don't *think* you have to be in the same state to do the title search, least not here in MA. Probably different in all states.

Just give the registry (RMV, DMV, whatever... different in all states too lol) a call!

Do a search on the internet for the phone number of the main DMV hub in MS. Then give them a call and they can mail you the forms for a title search. Once you fill them out you will need to mail it back with a check/MO to get a title search. You'll need to do this for any state the car was registered until you get to the end of the line.

My '71 T/A has been in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin so I had to quite a bit of work to get title searches.

FYI, I have seen where the DMV will just use a black magic marker over the name and address on the copy of the old title they send you to protect the identity of the previous owners. If you hold it up to a light you can usually read it and contact the previous owner!
