The Frayed Ends Of Sanity
I'm still trying to track down my RPOs and/or build sheet but something keeps nagging at me. I tore the inside of this car completely out for its resto-mod (seats which were recovered, carpet, radio pod, plastic trim, door panels..but not the dash or the headliner tho) and I never found the build sheet. I did find a chasis or interior partial-sheet but it's useless because most of it stuck to the cargo area and was unusable. Does anybody know why the build sheet was MIA? Do I need to take the dash off too? I know the interior was stock and was not removed prior simply due to the obvious neglect it incurred. Any ideas at all????

The RPO codes were ussually in the glove box in the center console under the lid. Lots of times it is lost because a person changed the console lid, or after a while it just gets ripped out. Lots of people try to get them from GM.. I got the "if the car is more than 10 yo they can not retrieve the RPO codes by vin number", I have gotten that statement from GM alot... The only other way is to go and get every part number off your car from the stamped numbers on the part. , then you can take it the numbers in and have them matched up and it will give you a fairly good idea at least i think.

Thanks Angelis, but this thread is mostly asking where else to look or what may have happened to the build sheet. I think I've posted a few too many questions about my RPOs so I'm hoping this new thread will lead me in a direction I've yet to explore. Thanks anywho....I've tried calling Pontiac as well but to no avail.

Well, I did read somewhere that there were two other places to look.. One was on the bottom of the driver's seat and then on the inside of the driver's side dash I think a person found one.. so it is one of those three places... if not there you may very well be outa luck
Not every car has the build sheet in it. The assembly line had discretion to throw them out or put them in the car. It's possible that yours was never in the car. My buildsheet was handed to the prior owner at delivery. If they didn't hand it to me, I wouldn't have one either. The original owner might have tossed it also.

I have found build sheets in two locations:
1) In the passenger door between the panel and sheet metal -- basically fell out when I removed the panel, and
2) In the driver's seat between the seat bottom sponge and spring -- impossible to remove without cutting the spring(s).

So apparently you have to dismantle the car to see if you have one since apparently they just shoved it whereever in the car

Most of the car has been dismantled, I'm gonna check under the dash but I'm about to give up on this. I stated in a prior post that I still had a couple options to retrieve the RPO codes so I'm gonna exhaust those and then just pretend that my car came with what's now in it. Thanks for all the help guys...I'm not gonna post on this topic again unless I find the blarsted codes somewhere. If I do..I think the first round of drinks are on me!

The buildsheet on my 84 15th Anniversary TA was on top of the gas tank. I found it when I pulled the tank to replace the sending unit.

Seems like we've uncovered the fun little game which the production line guys played:- "Where can we stuff the build sheet today?"

I got one copy given to me with the "history" i got with it. Then while taking the carpet out to give the inside a clean, i found another identical one stuck to the drivers rear floorpan!
I'm leaving it there anyway.
Now i'm assuming the original one is the one the 1st owner got when the car was delivered?
Or have i just got 2 by luck?

Mine was under the rear carpet (on the gas tank hump) in my 84 Z28, and stuffed in the spare tire well (over the wheel) in my 88 Iroc.

I think Scott summed it up, some had it some did not. as far as it goes, they could have stuffed it inside the rear fender area and welded over it.
There was a car that had a horrible rattle from new, and no one could ever figure out what it was, and finally they found that someone in the factory put a bottle in a spot that was welded closed...
Build sheets are kind of like that bottle, you might have to cut up your entire car, and then if your lucky it might be there.
