'77 350 motor?

ok, i just recently found my engine code located on the passenger side in front of my valve cover. the number is V0404CLD. im not sure if they are zeros or o's, but all the sites i look at say the last 3 numbers/letters tell you what it is. well when i looked it up it says its a 1977 350 vette engine. that HAS to be wrong, because i don't think that adds up at all... can someone help me out with this dilemma?! im so confused.

What side of the block is the dipstick on? Its very likely it was swapped out at some point.

left side. and thats another thing, my friends dad has a 1990 T/A GTA with an L98, and our engines look alot alike. is it possible, someone just changed the block and kept everything on top? im clueless when it comes to what fits, im new to it all. also, i got my car 2 months ago, and i kno for a fact its been in a wreck, because my front end is off alignment slightly. also, all of my wires and things are slapped on really sloppy, i had to unplug so many things and hold back so much stuff just to get a toothbrush over the numbers to scrape the crap off.

So it looks like this (ignore the supercharger):

Or this:

The first one is a TPI motor, the second is a TBI motor. Yours would have had a 305 TBI stock. There's also a label either on the inside of your hood or on the top of the radiator. It'll contain information about your emissions and it should list the engine size.

If those numbers are right it's possible it was swapped out.

The number in front of the valve cover is frequently changed to sell the car with a better motor than it really has. Trust me, I bought a 74' Nova with a '65 Vette motor in it, but the rear codes said 69 2bbl 4 door 350.

You need to get the numbers on the back of the block.

Wow...u got stung by a SCAM ARTIST, cause that's a lot of work to mill those numbers off and stamp new ones back on there, especially for a '74 NOVA.....

Not really, just file them off and use a number punch with a hammer.

the heads/intake and whatever can be anything by now

can swap 55-95 stuff on the block just fine

so it can look like any engine really except that the oil stick is on driver side through 79 and pass side 80 and up

good luck
