Why does my GTA have Breakaway mirrors
I have a 1987 TA GTA. It's the only one I have ever seen that has a rectangular euro style breakaway mirror. Whats up, is this rare?

Yes, they are very rare! I understood that they only offered the Porsche style mirrors in 88 though, oh well. Go to www.gtasourcepage.com for more info like production numbers.

Yes, those "Euro" mirrors are rare on the '87 GTAs..... it was the only year they were offered on US-bound cars. Only the first bunch of production GTAs had these mirrors on them; sometime during the early part of the '87 model year, the line switched over to the regular aero mirrors instead.
It has been said that the swap occurred due to the fact that the larger mirrors were much more prone to be knocked "out of whack" in close quarters with other objects. As for production, it is unknown the exact number of cars built with them..... I have heard estimates as low as 50 and as high as 200 or so cars.
FYI, the GTAs built for export used these mirrors up through 1992.

You camaro/iroc guys missed out on a lot of Pontiac goodies.
I, myself am not sure what break-away mirrors are, but a notch-back is a fiberglass,trunk-type hatch w/a small glass window. It was factory installed on some TAs(rare) but could be had aftermarket.
It's a huge weight saving. I had an souped-up 350/IROC, yeas ego, with that hatch+fiberG hood and fenders and it shaved 3 tenths of my ET.I also had all the ground effects removed.

90 Formula-WS6-TPI-305/5 speed. Slightly worked.
