Posi?

ok, i have posi, both my wheels spin in the same direction when car is up on jacks. also, both wheels peel. my car was all stock when i bought it in 1998. no mods were done untill i got it. so no one changed the rear-end. but i got the packet from PHS. but it doesnt say i have posi. also. i have 3.23 rear gears, but that was only with G92. i think PHS isnt telling my all about my RPO codes.

here are my RPO codes.
B84,MX1,VJ9,QYH,C60,K35,A90,A01,TR9,B34,B35,AU3,A31,UN3,N33,CD4,B20,B48,CC1,LU5.

do you think maybe the car was not ordered right and they lost some info at the dealer??

G80 is the code for posi-traction. If you dont have that code, you dont have posi.

I'm sorry i can't help you with your question but i have one for you: Does PHS just ask you for your VIN # and they tell you everthing in the dealer's records? Or did you have to give them the RPO codes. The reason i ask is that i dont have any RPO codes in my car and if they know what the original ones for my car were I am very interested in it. Thank you,
John

I am right at this moment looking at the Firebird Illustrated Buyers Guide third edition. RPO code G80 is Limited-slip differential, not posi-traction. However, posi-traction and a limited slip differential are basically the same. They both transfer driving force to both rear wheels at all times. This explains why "both wheels peel". I'm also assuming that RED82TA5.7L must have a transplanted engine (or is misinformed) because the top dog for 1982 was the 5.0L dual EFI 305 Crossfire-Injection V-8 engine available under RPO code LU5. This package included the Crossfire-Injection V-8 and limited-slip differential among other things. The 5.7L engine was not offered in Firebirds until 1987.

Limited slip is not kind of like Posi-traction....It IS Posi-traction. Posi-traction is GM's trade name for Limited Slip. Limited slip is the technical term and then each car manufacturer gives it their own trade mark name.

Chrysler called their LSD "Sure-Grip" and I cannot recall what exactly what Ford calls theirs.

GM makes a lot of different types of limited slip differentials, all called Posi-traction. But what people are confusing are the the different types GM made.

And Kevin is correct on the RPO code, it is G80. If you have an LSD, but no RPO code, possibly someone replaced the rear axle or had it installed later.

Something I've found in dealing with RPO's lately is that the early cars from 82 up to 85 don't have all the rpo's as a later model car would have. Its very possible that you have options that aren't listed on that card or in the records, as its also possible that the codes may have included additional options. The bummer is there isn't any way to really know for sure.

Thanks for basically repeating what I said Glenn. Other names for a limited-slip differential are posi-traction, sure-grip, equal-lock and no-spin. And Red, sorry but I loaned my Illustrated Buyers Guide to a friend for the weekend, so I'll have to get back to you.

Glenn, I think the name for Ford's limited-slip differential is Traction-Loc, but I'm not sure. Also, I'm not disputing that Posi-Traction is GM's trade name for limited-slip. What I was trying to say earlier is that the G80 option is part of the LU5 option package.

A limited slip axle was not part of the LU5 cross-fire option. limited slip axles were req'd with rear disc brakes. I had a '82 Z28 Indy, it had a LU5 without limited slip. Chris

cs2000, all I can say is that I'm getting this info from the Firebird Illustrated Buyers Guide. It says LU5 came with a limited-slip differential. Maybe the book is incorrect or maybe there was some delete option I don't know about.

RED82TA5.7L, I finally got my book back and this is directly from the book: "Dual EFI engine package (avail. on Trans Am only; incl. 5.0-liter dual EFI 305-ci Crossfire-Injection V-8 engine, 215/65R15 blackwall steel-belted radial tires, special handling package, limited-slip differential, sport hood, front and rear power disc brakes, and dual exhaust system" The price for this was $899.00 without Y84(I'm not sure what Y84 is) and no charge with Y84.

First, CS200, you could get disks with an open diff. I have one. An '83. I think Roth is right in that there are delete codes for posi's because of mostly the Northeast. Anywhere it snows. Posi scares the living you know what out of some people, especially women. I'm sure you could order any combo of drivetrain without it. Delete codes are a grey area because they are usually used very little. Every '93 4th gen Formula came standard with A/C unless you knew about a little known delete code that would take it off and return you $800. No dealer in the world would order one without air unless a customer knew it could be ordered that way and did so. I dought 99% of the dealers knew about it. Gm does ALOT of stange things. Like the fact you CANNOT buy a new Trans AM without t-tops. I tried.

Y84 is Recardo or GTA depending on the year ofcourse.

How 'bout Twin Spin? .....AMC

If one could not read the code stamped on the axle from the factory and the tag is no longer on the pumpkin, how else can you tell if it is a "posi"? Will both wheels turn forward and back if you spin the pinion? Or do you have the take off the plate to look inside? What should oyu look for? thanks

rusty, the easiest check for posi is this. Jack up both rear wheels. Leave it in park. If you can't turn the wheels, you have posi. If it turns, and the other moves the other way, you are open. You then double check your work but putting it in neutral. Turn a wheel. If both turn the same way, you have posi.

Well just to inform you all , that when a one legger starts to go it will act as if it is a posi, the car is an 82 , so i would have it checked , my 83 ta did the same thing , and an oldtimer I know told me about the one leggers acting like posi's when they start to go , so we checked it and sure enough it was shot , surprisingly it didnt howl at all , which is what they usually do. so i would have it checked , im not saying it is a one legger , but i would have it checked out.

Thanks for the input guys. I know the axle is original and since it's an auto, the open 3:08 is all it could be. It just suprised me that both wheels moved simultaneously with the pinion. I tried the "park" trick and you were right. Fortunately I'm swapping it for a 3:23 posi next week.

rusty z it probably doesn't matter, but the autos came from the factory with 2.73 rear gears and the manuals came with 3.08.
