Very unusual Camaro, please help
Very unusual Camaro, please help
Hope someone over there can help me as I am not able to get any info here in the UK.
I have bought a 1986 Camaro IROC with a 5.0, auto, Edelbrock and a VS Holley. The car feels pretty quick for a supposed 155hp(?).
The strange thing about the car is the bodywork: There are no Camaro badges anywhere on it, just a Designed by Pininfarina badge on the trunk lid and the dash. The trunk lid is a notchback design with a black tinted window, the lid then has flying buttresses like a Jag XJS running down each side of where the glass hatch would normally be. These have large slots cut in them.
The front end looks standard but the wheelarches are widely flared, running back into the body with mock brake cooling vents. The guy I bought it from said that it was GMs car from the 86 motor show(didn't say where) but I have no proof. It looks fantastic and sounds great but I would really like to know why the car looks like this. It also has a steering wheel badged as being designed by Guigiaro.
Please can someone tell me why all these Italian designers have had their hands on my car.
While your at it, the car is a bit tough to start needing a boot on the throttle to get it going, then it's pretty smokey till it's warmed up. Doesn't smell like burning oil though just strongly of normal exhaust like it's far too rich.
Cheers, hope you can help

maybe if you would post a pic of your car here, then someone can identify it well for you.
if you didn't know how to post, then ask and someone will tell you how. i personally don't know how, sorry.

There is a camaro that runs around here that looks similar to what you are describing, and it has a body kit on it. It does look pretty cool. I know that the car was totaled and then it was redone with this kit. Yours is probably a kit too, but I would love to see pictures

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
It would definitely be interesting to see some pics of this....
Starting in 86, the LG4 was rated at 165 hp due to an increase in compression; prior to that they were rated at 145-150 hp with the sole exception of those used in 'California-only' four-speed Corvettes in 80 or 81 (one year for emissions reasons) which were rated at 185 hp.
