Trans Am or just a firebird?????

How do I know if my 83 firebird is a Trans Am or not? It's a V8 305 automatic.

I was about to say check the RPO codes but they didn't start until '84. Vin # maybe?

------------------
'88 IROC TPI 355, '69 truck 4-bolt, fully balanced, 9.75:1 compression, fully ported '70 truck heads(for now), Harland Sharp 1.6 Roller Rockers, Comp Cams CS 252AH-12, ported '86 TPI converted to speed density, Crane AFPR, Flowmaster 3in. exhaust, Edelbrock TES headers, all emissions equipment is still intact, plan on burning my own chips, many more mods and parts on the way as time and money permits =(
Best E.T. with TBI 305: 16.11 @ 82mph
Haven't been to track with new motor
If you have any questions on converting from TBI to TPI email me at jdkchevy70@yahoo.com
In memory of Dale Earnhardt, I'll miss cheering for that black #3 on raceday!!!

In your VIN, the #5,6,&7 position codes should be W87. That is for TransAm.

The rest of possible codes would be:

T87 = Base Firebird
U87 = Firebird Esprit
V87 = Firebird Formula
W87 = Firebird TransAm

Good luck and hope this helps.

If you have CFI, it's also a TA. Some of the Ta's in 83 came with carbs tho. But if you have a CFI unit, then it's a TA.

most TA's in 83 came with a carb , but the easiest wat to check is if it has the vents in the lower front fender and the little pods right in front of the rear wheels , and also the trans am came with the tinted tail lights, which also came on firebird s/e models which is what you might also have

For 82-86

If the 5th digit is S it is a base Firebird
If the 5th digit is X it is a Firebird S/E
If the 5th digit is W it is a Trans Am
