May 2001 GTA Spotlight / Leather Interiors

For those interested, the May 2001 GTA Spotlight is now posted on the GTA Source Page. Take a look at a beautiful 9,000-original mile '87 GTA if you get a chance.

Also, Atlanta Buick Specialties is gearing up to make repro leather upholstery kits for our T/As, GTAs, and '89 TTAs. I have been working with Alan Faircloth from ABS, and they now have a donor 1992 GTA that is going to be supplying the pattern for these interior kits. Repro kits may be available in as little as six weeks from now. From what I understand, they also plan to offer OEM-quality steering wheel re-wraps as well.

For any of you who have wanted to convert your cars to a leather interior, here is a great chance to do so with a quality product at a reasonable cost.

In addition, by mentioning the ABS ad/link on the Source Page, Alan will be extending a special "GTA Source Page" discounted savings package for all page visitors who buy these kits. From what I've seen of their Buick GN/T-Type/GNX repro stuff, the quality is award-winning..... and Alan guarantees that this new F-Body stuff will be the same.

For more info, visit ABS' website..... Thanks and have a great day!

Yup, I'm giving Alan my leather interior next week for the pattern. I'll be taking out the front and back seats and driving them down to their manufacturer.

This is a more than excellent opportunity for all GTA/TTA owners to replace their leather or upgrade to it. These will fit all 3rdgen Firebird back seats and all 3rdgen "Optima" front seats. They will also be the same as the 4thgen Firebird front seats (the headrest is different though).

So are they going to offer the new leather to reupholster our exisitng seats, or are they going to sell remanufactured seats instead?

Aside from not having the original seats anymore, wouldn't it be easier to just buy fourth gen leather seats? Especially since they are almost identical to the GTA seats?

They are going to offer just the covers. 4thgen back seats aren't the same and 4thgen front seats wouldn't be original looking.

Well, congrats Alex..... Good thing you stepped up for this because I was going to offer up one of my '88 GTA's interiors if Alan couldn't find a local CA donor. He sent me a photo of the GN seats they have done and they are fantastic!

They are still going to have to find either a donor '89 TTA or a donor GTA Notchback to do the correct rear seats for the 20th Anniversary cars. But,yes.... this is an excellent opportunity for other car owners to "go the leather route". I'll most likely be going in for a set or two myself.....

Thanks. He sent me that picture too and it was a very good job. I have alot of confidence that it will turn out perfect. I didn't know that TTA and notchback rear seats were different....how are they different?

Alex, the TTAs and Notchback GTAs use upper rear seat cushions that have a integrated headrest built into them. The bottom cushion is the same as all GTAs.

I'll try to get a photo and post it for you......

The timing couldn't be better. I'm hoping to recover my 88 GTA's seats this summer.

Hopefully the pricing will be reasonable. I looked into redoing mine before, and just the RAW LEATHER was going to cost me more than retrofitting to a brand new (used) 4th gen interior.

Yes, please post a picture.

I'm going to take the time while my seats are out to completly finish the restoration on my GTA. I'm doing the complete Zaino job including the polishing compound, having the interior carpet cleaned, installing a new lid on my center console, and deatiling my wheels Then i'm going to the Westcoast Trans-A-Rama and enter her in the stock class 82-92 and see what happens It's gonna be sweet because I'm going to post my original window sticker up in the window BTW, does it go in the driverside or passengerside window?

Right on, those seats look way cool. Thanks Frankie, I'll have my window sticker on the passenger side.
